FORMER Newport County and Wales star Mark Aizlewood believes Carmarthen Town duo Christian Doidge and Luke Cummings could shine for the Exiles.

Newport-born Aizlewood, who played for County between 1975 and 1978 and won 39 caps for Wales, is now manager of Carmarthen in the Welsh Premier League.

And while he’d be disappointed to lose striker Doidge and right-back Cummings, who are training with Justin Edinburgh’s men this week, he believes any move would be good for County and the Old Gold.

Doidge caught Carmarthen's eye after top scoring for Barry Town in the 2011-12 campaign.

The former Croesyceiliog and Cwmbran Celtic player has netted 16 times in 30 appearances this season and his manager is full of praise for the 21-year-old.

“In my 30-odd years in the game I’ve never seen anyone as good in terms of aerial ability,” Aizlewood told the Carmarthen Journal.

“There are other things he needs to work on, like ball retention.

“But in my time I haven’t seen anyone better at heading, and I'm talking at Premier League and international level.”

Former Bath City defender Cummings, aged 22, has made 27 appearances this term in the WPL.

“He’s got everything to be a good modern-day full-back,” said Aizlewood.

“I would say that the vast majority of Doidge’s goals have probably come from Cummings overlapping and crossing.

“Full-backs have to play as wingers these days and Luke most definitely can. Now he has to take things to the next level.

“We can't give them thousands a week, but we can give them professional standards,” he added.

“They will head to Newport with the same fitness levels and the same attitude as the other players.”

And Aizlewood believes their potential progression to the professional game would encourage other players with similar ambitions in the direction of Richmond Park.

“We are not a football club that stands in people's way,” he said. “Players now know that if they come to us we can improve them and there are opportunities out there.

“A deal would need to be struck between the two clubs, but I don't get involved in that. It’s between the directors.”
