NEWPORT sprint star Mica Moore has started her season on a high as she targets a place in the Welsh athletics squad for the Commonwealth Games.

The 21-year-old, a former Newport Harrier who now runs for Cardiff, has been named on the selection shortlist for Glasgow 2014.

The former Bassaleg School pupil, who is coached by her father Lawrence, is a multiple Welsh champion at age group and senior levels in 60m, 100m and 200m and has also won medals at UK level.

Moore must now run the B standard time of 11.5 seconds to qualify for the 100m individual race in Glasgow.

She is confident that she can achieve that and there is also hope for the 200m after she recorded a personal best over the longer distance at the weekend.

Moore, who is studying sport and PE at Cardiff Met University, won three medals in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Championships in Bedford.

She claimed bronze in the 100m in 11.94 seconds, just outside her personal best of 11.8 seconds.

In the 200m? her time was 24.47, beating her previous best of 24.54, and she missed out on gold by a hundredth of a second.

And she also added a silver medal in the 4x100m relay.

“Mica is still chasing an individual time for the Commonwealth Games,” said mum Lolita Byfield-Moore.

“Based on these performances so early in the season we are confident that she will achieve it.

“It is about taking every opportunity and finding the right conditions to get that time,” she added.

“We’re hoping that Mica makes it and if she does it will be very special because she’ll be there with her dad as coach and they have a unique coach-athlete relationship.”

The Welsh Championships and team trial for the Commonwealths take place in Cardiff on May 31 and June 1.

Welsh Athletics says the event will be “organised to give welsh athletes the best chance of qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.”
