County boss Edinburgh set for transfer hiatus

NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh is going on a transfer hiatus for a few weeks, because he doesn’t believe there is value in signing players in June.

The Exiles boss has so far made a trio of summer acquisitions, adding defenders Kevin Feely and Darren Jones and midfielder Yan Klukowski to his ranks at Rodney Parade.

The former Tottenham man, who this week questioned his former club for their appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, is, however, now ready to go on hiatus despite a desire to add to his squad.

Edinburgh has 21 contracted players in his first team and is understood to want at least two more, a midfielder and a right back, but he’s now ready to bide his time.

“This is the time to wait, without a doubt, the value certain players put on their own heads now and in a month’s time, can be very different,” he said.

“What players are starting to realise is the vast, vast number of people out of contract on July 1.

“That’s what fans maybe don’t realise, that is when players officially become free agents and that’s when people really realise the severity of being unemployed.

“With the core and the quality I feel we’ve assembled, we can afford to wait and bide our time and have a look in pre-season at one or two. There can be a lot more willingness at the start of July than the start of June.

“There are always one or two gems that appear at that time of year who have filtered down from the top levels and we can, I think, afford to be a little bit patient over the next few weeks and try and find those players.”

Edinburgh is fully confident life won’t be a pitch for his squad next term, the problematic Rodney Parade playing surface currently undergoing round-the-clock treatment to improve the drainage.

“The work is being done and there was never a doubt that was going to be taken care of this summer,” he said.

“The drainage is being done, we needed it in place and I don’t think there is much more the club can do, I think it’ll be a decent playing surface next season.

“To be fair, up until Christmas, it held up well this season and it just had a difficult spell that maybe cost us finishing a little higher than we could have.”

Edinburgh is now set to turn his attention to other club matters aside from transfers and admits he is itching for August to roll around.

“As much as you need a break, I’m desperate to get back now, I think the wife has already had enough of me,” he said.

“As a group we feel we have unfinished business and that’s why we want to get back into things.”

Well, County have been one of the worst League2 teams since Xmas and start next season with pretty much the same squad so JE is not in demand and has a big job to turn that around. Last season JE was never going to get the Portsmouth job and only Northampton were interested (unoffocially) last season. Both of those in worse positions than County.

I do though think he's a good manager and he'll be better for last seasons experience. Let's hope he is in demand because that means county are doing well !

YES!! I'm concerned about this, Howe & Crow would get nowhere near the RP pitch if I had anything to do with it, the jury's still out on Jeffers but Zeb, AOC & Jolley have proved their worth in my opinion, injuries took their toll on them last season but I think those 3 will click next season.

I agree with the post above about Gabiddon & Earnshaw, they could do a job at this level.
