Wales men's hockey team announced for Glasgow

SENIOR men’s head coach Zak Jones has named his 16 player squad set to compete for Team Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

With a team of Commonwealth debutants, apart from Manchester 2002 competitor Huw Jones, the squad have worked hard over the past 12 months to earn their place in the squad and to compete at the biggest Welsh multi-sport competition in the calendar.

There are two sets of brothers in the team with head coach Zak Jones joined by brother Huw Jones – the most capped player in the squad – and James and Daniel Kyriakides both included.

Following a successful season Cardiff & Met will have four players represented in the squad.

Lewis Prosser, son of former Wales and Great Britain captain David Prosser, is also a member of the squad.

Zak Jones said: “The final selection of the 16 for the Commonwealth Games has been incredibly difficult, which is a huge credit to all the players that have been involved in the Senior Men’s programme over the past 18 months.

“The group have remained fully engaged and united throughout, and the standard and intensity of training has never been higher. “I am very proud of where we are as a collective group and would like to take this opportunity to thank all the players for the selfless commitment and integrity they have shown throughout the programme and selection process.

“The Games gives the selected 16 a fantastic opportunity to test themselves against some of the best nations in the world as we continue to look to move forward and progress as a group. “I would like to congratulate them on their selection. I know that they will represent the senior men's squad with humility, passion and pride.”

Chris Jenkins, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales, said: “We’re delighted to be able to select a men’s hockey team to compete for Team Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“It’s been 12 years since a men’s team has been involved as part of Team Wales with just one of the players in this squad already having Commonwealth experience.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the squad pull on their Welsh jersey’s and compete for Wales in just a few weeks’ time.”

Wales squad: Benjamin Carless, Peter Swainson, Lewis Prosser, Andrew Cornick, Matthew Ruxton, Richard Gay, Huw Jones, Nicholas Rees, Liam Brignull, Rhys Gowman, Owain Dolan-Gray, Michael Shaw, James Kyriakides, David Kettle
