Jon Mould hoping for success in his own back yard this week

The NFTO Pro Cycling rider is gearing up to take on stars like Sir Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas in the British National Time Trial and Road Championships.

And the road race, which begins and ends in Abergavenny on Sunday, will be perfect preparation for next month’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“I’m racing in the road race on Sunday and it should be a good day,” said Mould.

“It’s a really hard course but it’s good to race on home roads because you get to know every little pothole.

“It does give you a slight edge because I do know these roads like the back of my hand but I don’t think there’s any pressure on me.

“I’ve got nothing to lose against the world tour boys. The pressure is all on the likes of Luke Rowe and Geraint Thomas so I’m hoping I can go under the radar and maybe sneak a result.”

Mould, who won the Madison and omnium titles at last year’s National Track Championships, has enjoyed a fine 2014 on the road so far.

The 23-year-old won three stages of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series and also came top of the overall sprint standings.

“It’s been a really good few weeks for me,” he said. “To get three wins and equal Ed Clancy’s record has been great.

“I wanted to get four individual wins to break Ed’s record and I was pretty close in Aberystwyth when I came second but it didn’t work out.

“It’s set me up really well for this week and for the Commonwealth Games.”

Mould will race in the scratch and points events at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome as well as the road race in Glasgow and he’s confident of success.

“I hope to get a medal in Glasgow and I think it’s a realistic goal with the track team we’ve got,” he said.

“Then with the road race it will be a supporting role for Luke and G and hope they do the business.

“My mum and dad are going up and hopefully my brother and my girlfriend as well so I’ll have a bit of support,” he added.

“I’m sure there’ll be a lot of Welsh support up there too so it should be a great experience.”
