Exiles boss dismisses Robert Earnshaw link

South Wales Argus: NO DEAL: Robert Earnshaw, left, in action for Wales against Croatia's Josip Simunic in 2010 NO DEAL: Robert Earnshaw, left, in action for Wales against Croatia's Josip Simunic in 2010

NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh has laughed off rumours of a move for former Wales international Robert Earnshaw.

The 33-year-old striker is a free agent after being released by Blackpool and the Daily Mail has reported that Earnshaw, who last played for Wales in 2012, has been offered a contract by the Exiles.

The Mail report reads: “Robert Earnshaw is considering an offer to play for ambitious Newport.

“The much-travelled 33-year-old is the only player to score a hat-trick in all divisions of the English Football League and is a free agent after leaving Blackpool at the end of the season.

“The League Two side are managed by former Tottenham defender Justin Edinburgh who recognises Earnshaw still has the ability to score goals.”

But Edinburgh has dismissed the rumour having said earlier this week that there will be no imminent transfer activity at Rodney Parade.

“There’s no truth in that story,” Edinburgh told the Argus at the end of the first week of pre-season training.

“I’m not sure we’d be able to attract someone of his stature but there’s nothing wrong with us being linked to players like that.

“It shows how far the club has come in recent years but I’ve got plenty of strikers here already.”

The Exiles currently have Aaron O’Connor, Christian Jolley, Chris Zebroski, Rene Howe, Shaun Jeffers, Danny Crow and new boy Joe Parker all vying for places up front.

Earnshaw has been in Newport in recent weeks but only to work towards his UEFA B coaching licence with the Football Association of Wales at Dragon Park.

The player posted the following on Twitter on June 20: “First day of the @FAWCoachEd B licence done 6 more to go. Learning the game from a different angle will also help me get better playing.

“By the way it's only preparation. I’ve still got years to play yet.”

Meanwhile Edinburgh says he is pleased with the first week of pre-season and he believes his players are ready for the first friendly at Evesham United on Tuesday.

“We’ve completed the first week and I’m very happy with how everything has gone,” said the Exiles boss.

“The players have all done well and they’re all looking forward to getting some game time on Tuesday.

“That’s what we’re working towards. I would think that everyone should get 45 minutes in and hopefully that will include the trialists we have with us at the moment.”

that is a shame i actually started to get interested in the news then .

with no activity or anything meaning to digest from county over the last few weeks , i read this and thought to myself yes that is the sort of
experienced player NEWPORT COUNTY need at this level of football.

a player who has been there and done it , played for the biggest clubs, has a few years left at the highest level, and has plenty to offer future employers , including hopefully a few goals, and QUALITY. which was seriosuly lacking from the forward line last season.

but the most important attribute would have been experience. a level head to help the youngsters of the county frontline.

you see other sides in league 2 with players of this age and experience, and they can be the difference between a top 10 finish , mid table going nowhere , or a relegation dogfight.

ah well back to slumberland , as i await "activity" ....... ah crap i almost forgot the season starts in under 4 weeks, better not sleep too long eh!

County are in the mix to go down next season. They have had the least transfer activity and carry the worst form over from last season. The odds are mediocre suggesting the bookies think a mid table finish is on the cards again, but many of the teams below have strengthened significantly. Without a league 2 quality defence we'll be looking at the drop. A good start is essential, if they go into the Christmas period with the same sort of lacklustre performances as last year they will be in big trouble. Personally, I'd take the financial hit and clear out some of the mercenaries that jog around for 90 minutes collecting their mortgage payments. My prediction is Exeter bottom and County second from bottom.

much maligned by the brazilian fans and media , but SCOLARES still sticks by his mis firing talisman ........ has DANNY CROWE got the same silky skills??? much maligned by supporters ??? backed by his manager ?????? come to think of it has anybody seen DANNY CROWE around this last month? he's not been playing in the san siro has he??

on the subject of shortened brazilian names , in the old days you had the likes of SOCRATES, ZICO , PELE, now you have FRED, OSCAR AND HULK , the brazilians need a chief literary writer to draft some new short names

To be fair, he is a very intelligent footballer.

Keep the ball on the floor and pass it and you see a different Danny Crowe. Keep it in the air and he might as well join us in the Hazell Stand.

His surname is Crow not Crowe. Also there is only a capital letter at the beginning of his name, not the whole of it. He is a link player and does the job he is there to do. He's not a six foot 5 target man.
