NEWPORT County made a nightmare start to the new campaign after slipping to a shock opening day defeat to Wycombe Wanderers at Rodney Parade.

The visitors, who only survived last season in the final minutes of the campaign to preserve their League Two status, were rewarded for an excellent defensive display as they took the spoils.

The Exiles were the stronger side throughout much of the first half, but they couldn’t make their chances count and were shocked on 41 minutes when Peter Murphy headed home a corner at the near post without a defender to challenge him.

It was a kick in the guts for Newport and things went from bad to worse when Darren Jones slipped and allowed the impressive Paris Cowan Hall to make it 2-0.

Justin Edinburgh switched his formation from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2 in the second period but the damage was done and County rarely looked like getting back into the game with Lee Minshull and Yan Klukowski missing their best chances in the second period.

Shocking display, disjointed throughout the team, nice pitch for Wycombe to play on,we just hoofed it up again,so thats the end of that excuse.
Robbie is great going forward, but fullbacks have to defend as well.so i guess we'll see jacko back there soon.
!st time ive seen Jones, say no more.
Sandell and Robbie lucky to stay on the pitch with petty fouls,so all in all a dire display, dig in lads its going to be a rough ride.
Nearly forgot,at least the fortress Rodney has gone early as well.

Perhaps Justin's promise of "many changes" should have been translated into actuality.

I am no tactician, but if you are losing 0-2 at half time and chasing the game, is it the right thing to do to switch from three forwards to two?

And didn't we let the impressive Paris Cowan-Hall go a few years back?

Well the excuse of a bad pitch causing the diabolical form after Xmas cannot be used anymore.
Our Chairman says Justin has got a job for life until a Premier team come calling. Do me a favour the fella has not even got a plan let alone a plan B.
Hoof the ball and pray that's obviously plan A.
Was watching him all afternoon and he relies totally on Jimmy Dack with no impetus from himself.
Stupid idea putting Robbie at the back until the last 10 minutes when he showed us what a class player he is.
We also have a new captain who shouldn't be in the starting 11 who can only hoof the ball forward.
Paris Cowan was superb.
Wycombe I believe are favourites for the big drop.
They looked the opposite playing against a bunch of non entities

A very disappointing display by the County, I thought we had sorted this midfield problem out but no we continue to hump the ball up route one, and not even try to get to grips with the midfield play. I am going to Reading on Tuesday and hope to see Jackson at full back because however good Willmot is he is never a full back, his best position is wide as was proved when he moved there in the second half. Still not the end of the world, we have all season to fix it. Failing that we could put a few ton of sand on that lovely playing surface lol.

JE must admit there is room for a BIG improvement. County players can talk a great game, but now its time to start playing a good game. Hoofing the ball up the pitch was tried all last season its a no brainer. We need ball on the ground players. As for premier teams looking for JE, that was a joke of course (wasn't it?). Won't be tunimg in on tuesday, surely there will be a good cowboy movie on somewhere.

Agree with all comments above. I said in these columns during the close season that JE faced a rude awakening if he thought his squad good enough to compete in Div 2 this season. We simply retained too much dead wood and failed to sign anyone any better than those released. Then we change a system that suits us to one that doesn't. We haven't three strikers worth playing up front and without Chapman starting we haven't a ball-playing midfielder. Then we also start the game without our best defender (the Yak). It's only one game and hopefully we can correct some of today's mistakes and improve, but I repeat that without some more decent signings (and it may already be too late) we are already in a relegation fight.

Glad we have the cup tie on Tuesday as it will give Justin the chance to try something different.Jackson must come in at full back and Wilmott must return to his righful position on the right of midfield.Yak must come back into the middle of the defence. We must also go back to 4-4-2 as the 3 strikers up front don't compliment each other. And I'm afraid I think Minch has had his day in the midfield as he is too slow and gives the ball away too easily.

One thing we know is that the 11 who started today should not take the field together again. They were hopeless. Fortunately County have enough players to substantially change the team for the better. If Yakubu is fit he should start. No way is Darren Jones better than him. Also Wilmott has to be pushed forward. His talent is wasted as a full back. Not impressed with Burge either. Looks very lightweight. Today's game pointed towards relegation. Strong action is required immediately. No excuses about it being early days. The team that took the field today will go down for sure.

Haven't got enough quality and fit centre halves to play three of them and have only got one proper full back so when doesn't play we're screwed, as was plain to see. The midfield was just poor team selection; why have your two creative players on the bench at home to one of the weaker teams in the division?

i think that there were too many pre season friendlies against non league opposition.

you are never going to gauge the ability of the team by continually whipping non league minnows.

some more challenging games should have been arranged maybe against conference opposition / league 2 opponents.

it is worrying to loose to wycombe and no disrespect to them , but agree with a comment made above, the pitch cannot be used as an excuse now.

i do sincerely hope this is not a carry over of form the second half of the season otherwise we will be struggling at the wrong end

and i hate being negative at the start of a new season but 75 % of the squard that played in that bad run was retained.county need to man up and stop pussyfooting around, play on the ground and feed the strikers the service their quality finishing deserves .

hope for an improvemnt in the next few games

It shouldn't be too worrying to lose to Wycombe.

Most bookies give very similar odds on both clubs for relegation.

Ladbrooks put Mansfield, Wycombe and ourselves level at 6/1 with only four clubs being on shorter odds to go down.

If the season finishes that way, it will be good enough.

Oh dear, a 4 -3-3 start. I have to say the set up just before kick off is the only time during a match that I can see what the playing system is. There are times when its like watching inexperienced kids playing football. There is no shape to the team whatsoever.
Why is Michael Flynn in the side? I hear some of the fans shouting "come on Quinney" when they should be shouting "Get off Quinney"
I watched every home match last season bar one and I'm sorry he doesn't do it for me. He drifts in and out of the game, rarely tackles successfully, can't pass long to save his life and didn't I read he is to be connected to the Countys' Acadamy - God help us!!! At least Mr Edinburgh took him off proving that he does understand what was blatantly obvious to everyone at the match.
Willmot at right back unbelievable! Where did that come from? He's at his best going forward and attacking - that's his forte. Many many fans feel David Pipe should never have been allowed to leave the club.
I'll be straight down the bookies tomorrow and see what price relegation, I suspect after yesterdays' performance they will be an extremely short price.

Come to Rodney Parade and watch Newport County play hoofball for 46 matches and get relegated. Where's my season ticket refund!? A truly disgusting performance! The players or should I say mercenaries that "ran" around the pitch for 90 minutes (if they weren't yanked off due to such shameful performance) collecting their mortgage payments, should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. An inept, passionless and pitiful performance from strikers that can't score, defenders that can't defend and midfielders that can't pass. I'm not going back to Rodney Parade to witness that kind of Conference style hoof it up the field without a clue slop this season. It was no better than Sunday football and a waste of money. Every team will be licking their lips at an easy 6 points from County this season. If County continue playing this way, and we all know they will, they will be relegated by March. In fact, I'm putting money on it! And to those whiners that start disliking this post because I'm too negative, you obviously didn't attend the game. Rubbish!
