SIMON Grainger has kept the Bedwas captaincy for the coming season and the 33-year-old back row forward could potentially lead a side that includes Newport Gwent Dragons skipper Lee Byrne.

The former Wales full-back features in the region's contingent that has been allocated to Bridge Field along with new South African signing Ligtoring Landman.

The others are props David Young and Phil Price, hookers Elliot Dee and Hugh Gustafson, locks Matthew Screech and Joe Davies, back row forwards James Benjamin and James Thomas, centres Jack Dixon and Ross Wardle and academy pair George Gasson and Conner Edwards.

It would appear unlikely that Byrne and lock Landman will ply their trade at Bridge Field – but the same would have been said about Kris Burton last summer and the Italy fly-half represented the club twice in 2013/14.

Bedwas have signed lock Josh Walker (Cardiff Met), hooker Alun Rees (Cardiff), lock/back row Alwyn Lee (Cardiff) and front row forward Ian Jenkins (Bargoed), scrum-half Joe Smith (Cardiff Met), fly-half Jack Maynard (Cardiff), wing/full-back Steve Taylor (Pontypool) and centres Aaron Pinches (Neath) and Paul Davies (Swansea).

"Competition for places will be tough this year with the younger players pushing hard to earn a first team spot," said chairman Mark Lewis.

"It's also good to welcome (centre) Matthew John back to the Bridge Field after taking a year out to travel and (scrum-half) Tom Rowlands, who was sidelined all of last season due to his ankle injury.

"We seemed to have improved on paper but we can only measure that when we hit the field."
