POINTLESS: County boss Justin Edinburgh has seen his sidel lose three out of three in League Two

First published in Sport

NEWPORT County AFC manager Justin Edinburgh is convinced that his side can bounce back from a winless start to the League Two season.

A 1-0 league defeat at Mansfield was their third of the season following losses against Morecambe and Wycombe Wanderers, and the Exiles were also knocked out of the Capital One Cup by Reading last week.

"I have every confidence in the group, in myself and you make your own luck and that's what we've got to do," said Edinburgh.

"We've been really harshly punished for any errors in our own box."

Chris Clements' early strike was enough to give the Stags victory, but Edinburgh felt his side's efforts deserved more.

He added: "I can't fault the effort or commitment, but we've had enough chances to get something out of the game, but we haven't taken them.

"But that's what happens when you're not winning football matches and we're certainly not doing that at the minute.

"We've got to regroup and take positives out of it. For long periods I thought we were the better side."

Last years squad was found to be wanting after a bright start to the season and the vast bulk of that squad remain. On paper, there's a lot of talented forwards but the strike rate for those forwards leaves a lot to be desired since the rise to football league status. Defensively, County have been shipping more goals than is healthy for years and though that has tightened up since League status, they continue to score less goals than they concede. I hope that Edinburgh's faith in his squad proves to be warranted, as a long, cold and dark season looms for him and his side otherwise!

I see that Jolley didn't get off the bench again. Are they keeping him injury free to ship out elswhere for deadline day, so we can bring someone else in ? I really can't understand why the boy is not featuring, especially when LS/JE did their best to bring him here. Is he not good enough or is it something we don't know about.Im sure he would make an impact given the chance.
Come on The 'Port !!! Make it 3 pts on Sat.

How many times has he said "regroup" when county has been at a loss.We need more quality in the side Justin. Its not a criticism of the players who are there at present(well it is),but this group have shown just how good/far they can go..I do Hope u can turn things round cos I'm running out of Valium

How many times will they have to regroup. The squad is jut not strong enough.Feely has promise but needs a decent experienced defender along side him as last season along side him.Minshell is not up to good enough in this division. And the only person who thinks that Jackson should be on the bench is Mr Edinburgh himself.

Felt sorry for the travelling fans, they must be feeling very miserable. Tim Thraves said County deserved a draw and I must agree with him. A lot of you are writing about the defence but the strikers aren't breaking a lot of delf. I think it's a case of finding the right combination up front, which so far hasn't happened. I'd like to see a settled defence (with Jackson in it) and Jeffers given a try.

I'm with Harvist on this one. I'll say it again(as in other posts) it's the beginning of the season. Yes, we ALL pay our entrance money, yes, we ALL want a winning team, yes, we ALL want the best manager in the world. But life ain't like that. I bet a lot of contributors, and severe critics of JE, were singing his praises when we were promoted! He doesn't need continual criticism of his methods and decisions. Give the guy a break. PLEASE! How many of you guys could step up to the plate and manage a football team? Hmmm.

COUNTYVOICE says...

every genuine county fan doesnt moan for the sake of moaning they moan out of frustration that their beloved side have lost again, and streched an unenviable record to 4 wins in 28 games.

we have a fully fit squard, we have the crown jewel playing regularly O CONNOR. we have a new pitch (which cannot now be used as a scape goat for bad results).

yet still county are making fundamental school boy errors that are costing games. i agree there doesnt seem to be consistency in selection.and the new boy yan kuzlowski has yet to be given a chance 49 goals in 4 seasons with forest green speaks volumes.

consistency is non existent. how many of the current squad are being carried ? maybe out of manager favourirism or contractual necessity?

i go back to last season when almost half to three quarters of the squad was out injured yet stil county performed miracles with a make shift side, that even at xmas had every county fan including myself salivating at the return of the "first team regulars".

yet what happens when they return county embark on their marathan 4 wins in 28 games spree.

some of the returnees not up to league standard? the finger certainly points in that direction. jolley cannot even get a game for some reason (and i have to ask maybe this run explains why he couldnt get into the wimbledon side).

i also have to ask myself why when county do get into a winnning position they cannot close out a game professionally? it has happened so many times before and im sure its been practised so many times before on the pitch .

alot of the contributors above say dont worry its only the start of the season , but i am worried we are four games in and four defeats.

i m thankful i dont suffer from vertigo , as looking up the table from the bottom spares me that .

so no more hot air in the argus about how we are going to stuff burton , how we huring sooooo badly, how we need a reaction. get on the pitch and let your boots do the walking ......

Its not 4 games Is it?
Its 4 wins in 28 with basically the same squad.
Some of his team selections are unbelievable.
Making Sandell Captain when he shouldn't even be in the side
Keeping a class act in Jackson out. Its nuts!!
Pipey did see the Red mist but at least he was a leader.
Fingers crossed for Saturday but if its the same team again we could get a thumping.
