NEWPORT County AFC may be 22nd in League Two but they will have no relegation worries – according to the man who denied them a first win of the season.

Burton Albion midfielder John Mousinho, who cancelled out Chris Zebroski’s opener in Saturday’s 1-1 draw, says County are far better than relegation scrappers.

And Mousinho does not expect many teams to come away from Rodney Parade with more than the point that his second half strike earned.

He said: “It was difficult and a battle. They are a team who having lost the first few games of the season were well up for it.

“They were a better side than their league position suggests.

“We were fully expecting them to come at us and we probably let ourselves down a bit.

“But I think a lot of sides we be happy to come here and get a point this season.”

After defeats at home to Wycombe Wanderers and away to Morecambe and Mansfield Town in the opening weeks of the campaign, Justin Edinburgh’s men go in search of a first league win at Portsmouth on Saturday.

Pompey, who won 1-0 at Oxford United at the weekend, are riding high in second place with ten points from a possible 12 so far.

The Exiles won 2-0 on their last visit to Fratton Park in December 2013 thanks to two goals from midfielder Mike Flynn, who is hoping to recover from a hamstring strain in time to feature on Saturday.

The return fixture at Rodney Parade in March, County were beaten 2-1 after both Adam Chapman and Darcy Blake were sent off.

Blake has since departed but Chapman will be hoping to make amends on the South Coast after striking up an impressive partnership with new signing Mark Byrne in the heart of the Exiles midfield.

Ismail Yakubu, who scored County’s goal that day, is likely to start on the bench again having been dropped for the match against the Brewers.

Yakubu paid the price for his error that led to Mansfield’s goal in the 1-0 defeat at Filed Mill last week.

And replacement Andrew Hughes performed well alongside fellow central defenders Darren Jones and Kevin Feely on Saturday.

Jones looks set to continue as captain with in-form wing-backs Robbie Willmott and Ryan Jackson keeping regular skipper Andy Sandell on the bench.

I'm sure his support in mitigation if we end up at the bottom will be very effective with the league authorities!
