NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh is urging supporters to get behind the club after admitting his dissatisfaction with Saturday’s attendance for the thumping of Wimbledon.

The Exiles are now seven games unbeaten in League Two and just two points off the play-offs, but Saturday’s clash with the Dons didn’t break the 3,000 mark.

And Edinburgh has confessed he is hopeful attendances will improve with County in fine form.

They blooded debutant Scott Tancock from Swansea on Saturday and Edinburgh has hinted another player from the Premier League high-flyers could be set for Rodney Parade in the coming days.

And with the feel good factor well and truly back among the Amber Army, Edinburgh is going as far as to directly ask supporters who have stopped coming to games to return.

“We are trying to progress the football club, I am coming up to three years here and where we are today is a million miles from when I started at the club,” he said.

“This is the best group of players I’ve had since I came here and the football we are playing is the best football we have played since I came here.

“We are realistic in our aims and I just want more people to come and enjoy it and what we are trying to achieve.

“We had 3,500 people on the first game of the season and 2,800 on Saturday and that’s my cry to the fans, how can we lose that many so quickly? After only one bad result at home.

“My shout to those people is to please give us a second chance.”

Edinburgh also revealed how a blossoming and fortuitous friendship is benefitting the Exiles.

The former Premier League defender is currently doing his UEFA Pro License course with Swansea boss Garry Monk at Dragon Park and the two have discussed potential loan deals, culminating with defender Scott Tancock arriving on Friday to ease Newport’s injury crisis at the back.

He was assured on his debut and Edinburgh is hoping to continue pursuing that avenue.

“Scott was immense, in terms of having only just walked into the dressing room, he was assured and accomplished and I’m looking forward to having him here,” he said.

“It was one that I discussed with Garry at Dragon Park along with another player we will look to bring in next week, which should boost our numbers. That is great, because we are light at the moment.

“We want to forge close links with Swansea and once Russell Slade gets his feet under the table at Cardiff that’s another phone call to be made as well.”

Edinburgh also revealed goalkeeper Lenny Pidgeley missed Saturday’s game with a virus, County only naming five substitutes and no back-up goalkeeper.
