NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh is hopeful his side are over their striker woes with loanee Joe Pigott keen to stay at the club.

County have so far selected six different front men this term and none have found their form, but Saturday’s thumping 4-1 win over AFC Wimbledon saw Pigott and Aaron O’Connor finding the net on an afternoon where Chris Zebroski also impressed.

Newport have also welcomed back Danny Crow to the squad and while Joe Parker, Christian Jolley and Shaun Jeffers are out on loan and Rene Howe injured, Edinburgh hasn’t ruled out bringing in another forward, understood to be a potential loanee from Premier League Swansea City.

However, Pigott, who joined on September 11 from Charlton Athletic, initially for a month, is keen to extend his tenure at Rodney Parade if the two clubs are willing to reach an agreement.

“I really like it here, the lads are humble and good company, I’m getting plenty of football and scoring goals and that’s about all you’d ever dream of from a loan deal,” he told the Argus.

“We are chasing the play-offs, that is achievable for this club and if the option is there to extend my loan then I think I would be open to that, I’ve enjoyed myself so far, so we will see where it takes us.”

Pigott is hoping his form will go to another level now he’s hit the net a couple of times.

“Two goals and a 4-1 win I couldn’t ask for much more than that and it came off the back of a very good performance as well, so I am very happy,” he said.

“Obviously I was just looking to play well while I was here, I want to do my bit for the team and to hopefully impress the fans, but I haven’t been measuring my success on just goals.

“But I have had a few chances in the past few games that haven’t fallen for me, but I was due some fortune in front of goal.

“I anticipated the ball coming off the goalkeeper for my first goal and just 20 seconds after the restart, it gives you a lot of belief.

“I think the goal was a sucker punch for them, it really set them back and was a perfect time for us to score.

“We managed to ensure there was no comeback, there were a few positive signs for them with the score at 3-1, but we kept our performance levels up.

“Confidence wasn’t an issue but I feel like I can kick-on from here in terms of goalscoring now. It was a big day for me.”

Edinburgh felt it was always a matter of time until Pigott got among the goals and has similar confidence in all his forwards.

“Joe just needed that little break and he got a couple of them on Saturday with slight deflections,” he said.

“He’ll hopefully kick on from that and we want all our strikers to be in form and scoring goals, because we crave competition all over the pitch and upfront we’ve not been as impressive as I know we can be.”
