NEWPORT County boss Justin Edinburgh might be eyeing the play-offs but he’s made a top ten list today, writes Michael Pearlman.

The former Spurs defender is now the tenth longest serving manager in English football according to the League Managers’ Association after Cheltenham Town sacked Mark Yates.

Before his dismissal, Yates was behind only Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger and Paul Tisdale at Exeter as the longest-serving boss in the country, but he’s paid the price for Cheltenham’s slow start after two successive seasons challenging for promotion.

"It was the most difficult decision I've had to make in my time here," chairman Paul Baker said in a statement.

"Mark was understandably very upset and I was too.

"Everybody who knows him will have a lot of sadness with the decision we've had to take, but we have to look after the business and look at results and performances.

"Something is not quite right and the manager has to take responsibility."

Cheltenham have confirmed they will announce a new manager at 2pm on Wednesday.

Top ten longest serving managers: Arsene Wenger, Paul Tisdale, Karl Robinson, Alan Pardew, Darren Ferguson, Dean Smith, Jim Bentley, Sam Allardyce, Phil Parkinson and Justin Edinburgh.
