GWENT youngsters enjoyed a successful weekend at the Welsh Indoor Championships at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cardiff.

The young athletes competed alongside the senior stars of Welsh athletics in under-17 and under-13 categories.

At senior level Aled Sion Davies broke his own F42 shot put world record on day two, throwing a best of 15.56m and adding 3cm to the record he set at the same arena at the Cardiff Met Grand Prix two weeks ago.

But at junior level the star performer was Isobel Parry-Jones (Cwmbran Harriers) who won the women’s under-17 1500m in a time of 4min36.85sec and the 800m in a new personal best of 2min11.90sec.

Thomas Arnold (Cwmbran) also had a good weekend, winning the under-17s men’s 400m in 51.36sec and finishing second in the 200m.

Arnold’s time of 23.17sec in the 200m saw him beat Ellis Wharton (Newport Harriers) into third place in 23.58sec.

Eve Williams (Cwmbran) also impressed as she won the women’s under-17 300m final in 41.47sec ahead of Cwmbran teammate Gabrielle Fakande in 41.72sec and was also second in the 200m final in 25.58sec.

Kellen Jones (Newport) finished second in the under-17 men’s high jump with a personal best of 1.75m and was also runner-up in the under-17s long jump, equalling his PB with a jump of 6.19m.

And Macey Jones (Cwmbran) finished second in the women’s under-17 long jump after jumping 5.10m.
