GLASGOW'S newest multi-million pound sports complex has been officially unveiled.

Pollok Civic Realm, which cost £10million to build, is a replacement for the old Pollok Leisure Centre.

The impressive venture, which opened last October, combines a gym and swimming pool with a library, leisure centre and health facilities.

And yesterday Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon officially declared it open.

Miss Sturgeon said: "This the most impressive community centre I have visited and a fantastic example of different organisations working together to improve services for people.

"It is also wonderful link between the community and Silverburn Shopping Centre. Large shopping centres can often sound a death knell for traditional shops but with the Civic Realm close by Pollok is benefiting from two tremendous facilities."

The comprehensive health centre, which serves 17,000 patients, includes the South West Stress Centre, a dental practice, a sexual health clinic and a podiatrist, all under one roof.

Visitors can also access employment services and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

Andrew Robertson, chairman of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: "Much of the success of the new facility is due to the dedication, expertise and commitment of its staff and the partnership working between all of the agencies involved."

Cathie Anderson, from Darnley, is already a fan of the centre's gym - she visits every day.

The 70-year-old said: "I love coming here because it's so a friendly.

"I've started bringing my grandchildren and great grandchildren along - it's suitable for all ages."

The centre, designed by Archial Architects, has already been shortlisted for two awards - a RIBA Award for the best new UK buildings and Best Regeneration Project at the Scottish Design Awards.
