RISCA United host Carmarthen Town on Sunday in the first ever round of Welsh Premier Development League matches to be played in south Wales.

Following the success of the northern section over the past three seasons, a southern equivalent has been set up by the Football Association of Wales.

Aberystwyth Town, Cambrian & Clydach Vale, Cardiff Metropolitan, Carmarthen Town, Haverfordwest County, Merthyr Town, Penybont, Port Talbot will all join Risca in the inaugural season of the WP Development League South.

League secretary Gwyn Derfel said: “The fact that five players over the age of 19 are allowed in a match-day squad helps the development of the younger players and also gives the older players important game time.

“Only three of the five over-age players are allowed on the field of play at the same time – so everyone’s a winner.”

Risca United, known as the Cuckoos, currently compete and runs three sides in the Welsh Football League, as well as the new Welsh Premier Development League (South) and seven FAW Academy sides.

The first team, led by player-manager Paul Michael are in the Welsh League Division One this season after achieving back-to-back promotions in 2013/14 and 2014/15, finishing in third place in both campaigns.

They play at Garden Village AFC in Swansea tomorrow, kick-off 2.30pm.

The Development League game on Sunday is at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach, kick-off 2pm.
