NEWPORT County’s super sub from the weekend Yan Klukowski admits he’d love a chance to show Exiles fans what he can do… playing in his best position.

The former Forest Green Rovers midfielder inspired County at the Crown Ground on Saturday, scoring and getting an assist as he shone playing in a more attacking role behind County’s strikers.

And Klukowski admits the feeling was a very nice one.

“It’s the first time this season I have played in my natural position, it feels natural, I feel I can create chances and get in the box a lot more in that position,” he said.

“When I got the nod to come on early it was a surprise, but it was great to get some game time and a goal. I haven’t had that feeling in a long time and it was very nice.

“All you can do as a sub is try and make an impact, I got a goal and an assist, so I’m delighted with my individual contribution, and hopefully it’s enough to keep my place in the team.

“I haven’t had the chance too much in a County shirt, the big run I can remember was under Justin Edinburgh from late October to early November (2014), I scored four in seven games. That was the biggest run I had.

“Sometimes when you are versatile, you suffer because of that and we got injuries in the full back areas and I was then asked to play wing back.

“You don’t mind doing a job for the team, it’s no problem, but in terms of the fans and management team seeing the best of me, Saturday was me playing in my best position.”

Klukowski admits the Exiles might have even taken all three points from the Crown Ground.

“I think there was a slight disappointment in the changing room, having led 2-1 and been 1-0 up, but considering the conditions, how far we’ve had to travel and the fact we were up against a top quality side, I think we head back to Newport pleased with the point.

“The conditions were tough, Scott Barrow was tackled by a few puddles, but we got more used to the conditions, it was a tough afternoon, but probably all the fans on both side are happy with a point.

“Accrington are a good side, they’ve been near the top all season and we’ve got a good 2-2 draw.”

Klukowski is now giving his full attention to the FA Cup ahead of Tuesday’s clash with Brackley Town.

“We want to get that first home win, it’s a huge game for us, we want to stay in the cup and keep our momentum going,” he said.

“It’s a tough draw at Barnet if we can progress, but we are up for the challenge and I think our performances at home have been improving.”
