NEWPORT COUNTY 0 COVENTRY CITY 2

LEAGUE One Coventry City were comfortable winners at Spytty Park this afternoon, as Newport County suffered their third successive pre-season defeat.

Seven summer signings made the County starting XI and two more came on during the second half.

Boss Warren Feeney had another look at trialists Paul Bignot and Marlon Jackson, while Joss Labadie was given the captain’s armband before kick-off.

The hosts edged the first half an hour with Sean Rigg creating two half-chances and Jackson scoring, only for the goal to be ruled out.

It was only in the last few minutes of the half that the Sky Blues came to life.

George Thomas had already forced a great save from Joe Day when, in the 43rd minute, he converted Marvin Sordell’s through ball.

City doubled their advantage on 57 minutes, this time skipper Jordan Willis tapping home from close range after Day had tipped Andy Rose’s header onto the crossbar.

Both Feeney and City manager Tony Mowbray rung the changes from that point on, and one of those, County’s Ben Jones, produced a superb clearance to deny Devon Kelly-Evans at the end.

County: Day (Beauchamp 78), Barnum-Bobb, Butler, Darren Jones (Angel 85), Bennett (Parselle), Bignot (Myrie-Williams 58), Randall (Owen-Evans 72), Labadie (capt) (B Jones 85), Compton (Dafydd Jones 73), Rigg (Parkin 58), Jackson (Meechan 78).
