ABERTILLERY tennis veteran Chris Hill gained his fifth British title when he and playing partner Arun Vethakkan secured the men’s over-55s doubles championship in London.

The British Seniors’ Grass Court Championships are normally held at Wimbledon but this year switched to Surbiton because of the new roof development being carried out on court number one.

On their way to the final, Hill and Surrey’s Vethakkan achieved notable wins over the England captain, Great Britain captain and, in the final, two other members of the GB team in the shape of Rajiv Batra and Graeme Adams.

Previously, Hill won the 2012 indoor and grass doubles titles with Tony King, the 2013 grass doubles with King, and the 2014 indoor doubles with Nigel Mann, all in the over-55s category.

“This is another great result for Chris,” said Peter Drew, chief executive of Tennis Wales. “He is an exceptional doubles player and this should boost his world ranking significantly.

“Tennis is one of the few sports that can be played competitively at all ages. New fun and accessible ways to play mean it’s never too late to take up the game, and Chris is a real inspiration.”
