WALES wing Hallam Amos will captain Newport Gwent Dragons at Treviso on Friday evening – and is happy to commit his future to Rodney Parade.

The 21-year-old will deputise for injured skipper Lewis Evans (calf) at the Stadio Monigo as the Dragons attempt to win an away Guinness Pro12 game for the first time since March, 2015.

Amos has won 10 caps and started all three Tests against world champions New Zealand in the summer but former Dragons captain Colin Charvis suggested on BBC's Scrum V programme that his international prospects might be better served elsewhere.

The Ospreys are said to be monitoring his situation while also eyeing fellow Wales speedster Liam Williams of the Scarlets but Amos is happy to stay in Newport on his national dual contract, which expires at the end of the current campaign.

The wing said: "I am happy, I've grown up here, it's my hometown club and I am pleased to be playing here and captaining this weekend. The captain doesn't run off does he?

"This is the last year on my current deal but the Welsh Rugby Union and the Dragons are looking to extend it."

The suggestion that Amos would stand a better chance of representing his country at the Ospreys, Scarlets or Cardiff Blues irked head coach Kingsley Jones.

The former Wales flanker said: "To propose that a lot of people would be interested in Hallam is fair play but to propose he would be better served playing for Wales if he played for another region is not correct. He has just played in the last three Tests."

On contract extension talks with Amos, the head coach said: "I think it's going in the right direction and Hallam is very happy here.

"He is very important for us and we are pretty confident he will be here. I've got no reason to think Hallam would be looking to leave us.

"He has grown up in the region, Hallam has been given a lot of opportunities here and he appreciates that.

"(Previous boss) Darren Edwards brought him in and played him in games; there is no doubt he is playing for Wales at 21 because Darren and the Dragons gave him those opportunities.

"Hallam is a bright enough guy and a good guy to understand that and there is loyalty both ways."

With Evans unable to take a full part in training and vice-captains Rhys Thomas and Nick Crosswell set to miss out on the XV, Amos will lead the Dragons out in Treviso.

"It will be good, it's not often at 21 that you are a captain and I am looking forward to it. I don't think it will affect my game too much," said the Wales international.

"I captained Gwent Under-14s so have a lot of experience in the role! But I have played under a lot of good captains now – Lions series winning captains (Sam Warburton and Alun Wyn Jones), Rhys Thomas, Lewis Evans.

"I have seen the way they deal with things so hopefully I can bring that to the table."
