IT’S been a frustrating week for the Exiles.

The home defeat to Wycombe was ‘one of those games’ – lots of possession and a few good chances but Sido Jombati’s late free-kick meant County took nothing from what looked a decent performance.

As they made their way to Blackpool they always envisaged a tricky encounter against the side who gained promotion to the Premier League in 2010 – the same year County won the Conference South.

Graham Westley’s men enjoyed a good first half and once again Rhys Healey got his name on the scoresheet.

But undoubtedly Sean Rigg’s penalty miss after the break was the turning point of the match.

Without our regular captain Scot Bennett a few heads dropped as if to say ‘that was it’ and before too long the promotion-chasing Tangerines punished that attitude with a second.

One of my friends kept saying to me ‘Kyle Vassell is a League One striker’ and when he sealed the game with a third for Blackpool I wanted him to sit with the home fans.

It’s always hard to pick yourself up from that string of events and against a team who should make the play-offs at least it turned out to be a tough day at the seaside.

Blackpool are a good side and not many team in this division will go there and get anything.

But County’s set-pieces have been a bit concerning recently.

We’ve often seen our own corners be the start of a counter-attacking move from visiting teams at Rodney Parade.

We have had some success from corners, but only scrappy finishes and Jennison Myrie-Williams’ curl straight from the corner, Sean Rigg’s free kick at Hartlepool and the two from the season’s opener against Mansfield are the only goals from free-kicks in the league so far.

Maybe a bit more luck could turn results in our favour, as in open play we are not the sort of team who deserve to be bottom of the league.

On Saturday we go to Plymouth in the FA Cup. They haven’t been brilliant recently, and to get back into the third round would be an incredible achievement for us. But it isn’t all doom and gloom for the Exiles.

Just look at Blackpool and their troubles off the pitch. We’re fortunate to be owned and run by the fans so maybe we are the lucky ones after all.
