GRAHAM Westley admits Newport County AFC have lost the winning way but he’s certain they’ll get it back soon.

County host Morecambe at Rodney Parade tomorrow on the back of three successive League Two defeats – a run that followed a seven-match unbeaten sequence for Westley’s men.

It means the Exiles are still bottom of the table but a win over 17th-placed Morecambe could lift them out of the relegation zone.

“We made some progress but we’ve had a slip and we know that we need to get back into that winning way,” said the Exiles boss.

“There’s all sorts of permutations and wonderments in terms of why we’ve lost our grip on winning but we’ll get it back, it’s what we do.

“It’s pretty normal when an organisation has been losing, and there was plenty of losing to start the season, you can sometimes get a bit of a leap forward in terms of standards.

“But generally speaking winning is much harder than losing and people get tired.

“You get this lull factor and I think that’s where we’re at.

“The club was losing, losing a lot; it started winning and winning is tough, it’s hard work and people can stick with it for a while and then they get this tiredness and I think that’s what we’ve seen over the past two or three weeks.

“The opposition have been tougher, we’ve played sides in Blackpool and Wycombe and Stevenage who are all top-10 sides and they’ve got that experience and know-how.

“All of those outfits have been together for some time now and they’ve got something to fall back on.

“They are big budget clubs in the main with big money players and they know the game.

“We’ve come up against those sides and you get tested that little bit more and young players particularly haven’t always got the experience and the know-how to face the challenges that are in front of them.

“It’s easy to slip back into losing ways and that’s what we’ve done.”

He added: “I’m not someone who tolerates that. I don’t tolerate losing.

“I tried to lift people’s spirits and drive them towards winning and we found a winning way.

“But now we’ve just left the habit behind so it’s a question of going back to square one, starting again and reminding them of good habits.”
