SWANSEA City midfielder Josh Sheehan could be set to stay at Newport County AFC with manager Graham Westley revealing that there have been “positive vibes” from the Premier League club about extending his loan.

The 21-year-old has scored six goals in 19 appearances for County since arriving at Rodney Parade on loan in August.

Sheehan is due to return to the Liberty Stadium when his current deal ends on January 21 but Westley says positive discussions have taken place about extending his stay in Newport until the end of the season.

“We’re hopeful that Josh will see the season out with us,” said the Exiles boss.

“There’s discussions still to be had but there’s no rush. His loan doesn’t expire yet and the discussions are well under way.

“There are positive vibes coming out of Swansea and positive vibes coming out of Josh.”

Westley does not expect a repeat of the situation that saw fellow loanee Rhys Healey return to Cardiff City this week after League Two rivals expressed an interest in the striker.

“Josh is a young player but I think he’s got his head screwed on,” said Westley.

“He’s probably looked at Rhys’ situation and thought ‘I don’t really want to go down that road myself; I’m playing, I’m scoring, I’m building my name and I’m in a place where I’m growing and developing’.

“You can be in a lot of bad places in football where you’re not playing and when you get into a good place sometimes it pays to carry on with that, see out the season and understand the psychology of a whole season at a club and be a part of lifting the club from where it is right now.”

Only five loan players can be picked in a match day squad and with Jaanai Gordan and David Pipe joining on a temporary basis this week the future of Jordan Green is unclear.

The 21-year-old is due to go back to his parent club AFC Bournemouth this month.

“All of the loans are under discussion or in the process of review,” added Westley.

“There’s obviously a lot to think about with loans because you can only put a certain number in your side at any one time.

“So I’m very conscious that I don’t trap lads into the club where I’ve got no real potential of using them.

“That would be unfair for their development so I’ve got to be very thoughtful about what I do.”

Sheehan should be fit for tomorrow's trip to Stevenage, despite being forced off with a knock in Monday's 2-1 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers.
