USK’S Abi Welsford will lead her Wales team into their final group game of Hockey World League Round 2 tomorrow morning on the back of an impressive thrashing of Singapore.

Wales, who lost 3-0 to current Pool A leaders Italy in their opening fixture, fired seven unanswered goals past Singapore, with Welsford among the scorers.

There were two apiece for Lisa Daley and Phoebe Richards, while Sarah Jones and Natasha Marke-Jones also got on the scoresheet.

Wales face Thailand, one place above them in the world rankings, on Tuesday morning before the knockout classification matches begin on Thursday.

Welsford, who made it 5-0 from a penalty corner against Singapore, was delighted with her team’s determination to respond following a tough encounter with the Italians.

“It was really nice to bounce back with such a strong performance after a slightly disappointing performance against Italy,” she said.

“We definitely stepped up our game and it was great to convert our dominance into seven quality goals.”

Head coach Kevin Johnson said: “I am delighted with the response after we knew we could and should have been better against Italy in a few key areas.

“We showed great energy and desire throughout and scored six goals from open play, which was a target for us to improve on.

“The quality and clinical nature of our finishing at times will hopefully give us both confidence and momentum going into our next challenge.”

Carys Tucker, who flew out to join the squad in Kuala Lumpur last week, received her 50th cap ahead of the match.

Abergavenny's Rose Thomas and Cwmbran's Danielle Jordan have played in one and two matches respectively so far.
