WALES Under-20s boss Jason Strange believes a taste of international sevens has accelerated the progress of speedster Jared Rosser but is sweating on the availability of the Newport Gwent Dragons wing for Friday’s Six Nations clash in Scotland.

The 19-year-old from Pontypool played in last summer’s World Rugby U20 Championship and started out wide in the win against Italy and defeat to England in the Six Nations.

Rosser, who plays for Ebbw Vale in the Principality Premiership, also represented his country on the HSBC Sevens World Series tournaments in Dubai and Cape Town in December.

The winger is touch and go for this weekend’s clash in Lanarkshire but Strange knows he has a top talent in his ranks.

“Jared just seems to be getting physically better all the time and has turned into a real athlete,” said the former fly-half.

“The sevens programme has really developed him, he has really benefited and looks really strong at the moment – it’s easy to forget how young he still is.”

Rosser was joined in the back three for the first two rounds by Dragons teammate Will Talbot-Davies but the full-back is also on the treatment table with a knee injury.

The 19-year-old from Solihull made a surprise full regional debut at Leicester in the Anglo-Welsh Cup in November and Strange believes the Rodney Parade side have another bright talent on their books.

“Twelve months ago Will was still playing for his sixth form at school so it’s impressive to be doing so well at the level of rugby he has experienced,” said Strange.

“He is a very good learner and is bright rugby-wise, while he has put on 12kg from when we picked him up with Wales Under-18s last year.

“Will is going to be a big lad and has made great progress in his first year as a full-time professional. Both him and Jared will hopefully be ready to really kick on next season.”

Wales are blessed with plenty of options out wide with Dragons winger George Gasson, the 20-year-old who scored the vital late try against France on the way to the Grand Slam last season, on the recovery trail from a knee injury while Cardiff Blues’ Rhun Williams and the Ospreys’ Keelan Giles are still eligible.
