DRAGONS and Newport chief executive Stuart Davies has pledged to provide Black and Ambers shareholders with more information about the Welsh Rugby Union’s proposed deal to take over at Rodney Parade.

The former Wales back row forward endured an uncomfortable but “productive” meeting with worried Newport supporters on Monday evening.

Last week the governing body announced that they had agreed a deal in principle that would see them take control of the Dragons and Rodney Parade on July 1.

That agreement needs to be rubber-stamped by Newport RFC shareholders at an EGM in early May with 75 per cent of those voting needed to give the green light.

It will be one vote per shareholder, although there is the potential for a poll vote to be called that would be one vote per share with directors Tony Brown and Martyn Hazell having enough between them to give the go-ahead.

That is a route that would have huge ramifications and the Newport board are keen to win the approval of the shareholders.

Davies and directors Will Godfrey and Jim McCreedy fielded questions from Black and Ambers fans and shareholders on Monday with the Friends of Newport Rugby Trust subsequently releasing a statement declaring “unfortunately answers to most of the important questions were not forthcoming”.

The chief executive acknowledges the need to provide those making the big decision with more facts in the coming weeks.

“The information will follow and Monday was productive in that respect. We need to make sure that in the coming weeks we deal with the reasonable points that were made,” said Davies.

“We recognise that we need to furnish the shareholders and supporters with the information that will inform their thinking. We will certainly do that.”

FoNR have asked for clarification on how much of the secured loans are to be written off by the directors after Godfrey, who is owed £175,000, told the meeting he was not looking for repayment. Hazell and Brown are owed around £1.5million and £3million respectively.

“In terms of figures there needs to be some understanding and there was a question about what the intentions of Martyn and Tony are,” said Davies.

“I can’t field those questions but I think they are reasonable and that needs to be understood before the vote is cast.

“There were a lot of fair points raised on Monday and while it may not have been easy (for me), it was certainly productive.”

Davies, who held a meeting with Dragons supporters last Thursday and sponsors yesterday morning (WED), has also committed to more consultations ahead of the EGM.

“What we realise is that there will be an awful lot of information in the shareholders pack, so there needs to be another evening before the vote,” said Davies.

“Monday showed the benefit of that and we can assure everyone that we will sit down with them again between issuing the pack to shareholders and the vote.”
