EBBW Vale produced a devastating performance to hammer hosts Llanelli and pick up the Heineken National Sevens Plate at Parc y Scarlets, writes Jay Bayford.

Toby Fricker touched down after just 36 seconds to give Ebbw the perfect start and both Andy Evans and Carl Lewis added further tries to extend the lead.

Ryan Davies gave Llanelli a lifeline but Fricker, Andy Evans and Jon Davies sealed the 31-7 win for Ebbw.

Elsewhere, Llandovery beat Aberavon to lift their fourth consecutive title.

The Steelmen put up a strong fight against Aberavon in their opening encounter but fell just short in the end, losing 28-19.

The defeat put them up against Bargoed in the Plate quarter finals and after a tough first half, Tom Hoppe and Fricker both crashed over to add to Callum Hall's second-minute opener to secure a hard-fought 19-15 victory.

And they continued to improve as the competition went on. Hall scored early on in their Plate semi-final against Bedwas only for Andrew Waite to hit back. But Andy Evans struck twice in the second half to inspire Ebbw to victory.

However, Cross Keys bowed out at the semi-final stage of the Heineken Nations Sevens Cup as they were beaten 31-19 by an in-form Aberavon.

Matthew Powell, Owain Leonard and James McCarthy all crashed over but Mike Wilson hit a brace to inspire the Wizards to victory.

Keys won their first game without touching a ball as they were given safe passage through to the Cup quarter finals as RGC 1404 turned up too late to play their opening fixture.

That saw them face Newport in a Gwent derby for a place in the Cup semi-finals. The Black and Ambers had already beaten fellow Gwent rivals Bedwas in the opening round.

Matthew John touched down for Bedwas in the opening minute but Newport replied through Ryan Bates before Curtis Ayling edged them into the lead.

Two quick-fire tries from the Wass put them in control but Newport were not to be denied. Alex Everett crashed over to put them back in the driving seat before a late fourth try sealed the win.

But they couldn't repeat that trick as Cross Keys recorded a convincing 22-10 victory in the quarter final.

James McCarthy and Matthew Powell had both touched down twice before Ryan Bates crashed over for Newport. But it proved too late to mount a comeback, despite the Black and Ambers managing a second try.

Meanwhile in the Women's Championship, Newport Gwent Dragons surrendered their title as they were beaten 24-5 by eventual winners Scarlets in the semi-final.
