WITH just over a month to go before the transfer window closes, Newport County AFC manager Michael Flynn knows he still has work to do to strengthen his squad.

The Exiles boss wants at least two more permanent signings before looking to add more players on loan.

Flynn has to work with a tight budget at Rodney Parade and he admits he’s had to patient this summer after missing out on several targets.

But he’s positive that the squad he is building will be ready to make their mark in League Two.

“There is still work to do, we’ve got less than six weeks of the window to go,” said Flynn.

“I’ve been very patient. The board has always backed me but the budget is the budget and it won’t be any higher unless somebody comes in and invests money.

“And, as we know, that doesn’t always end right.

“It’s got to be right and in the best interests of the football club,” he added.

“I’ll never try to push for something that I don’t think we can afford. I’ll always do what’s right for the club.

“It’s got to be the right blend, the right number and the right ability.”

Flynn again reiterated that he will not be rushed into signing the wrong players, despite recent disappointments.

“We missed out on a good striker,” he said. “Everything was agreed and then their club changed their mind the day after.

“Alex [Tunbridge] the new CEO and Gavin Foxall the chairman were absolutely instrumental in that and unfortunately it didn’t happen.

“It was a permanent signing and he was the one I was looking for.

“I was really disappointed but that was a couple of weeks ago and we’ve moved on since then.

“And I’m not going to rush in and sign someone just because I’ve missed out on one.”

As for potential loan signings, the manager has several targets.

“I’ve had to be patient with a couple of people I’m interested in bringing in on loan because they’ve been away with their first teams,” he said.

“Some we’re going to miss out on and hopefully some we’re going to get.”

County conclude their pre-season preparations at Justin Edinburgh’s Northampton Town tomorrow.

And Edinburgh, who led the Exiles to promotion in 2013, is looking forward to facing his former side.

“I had nearly four seasons there and I made some really good friends and had some fantastic times,” he told the Northampton Chronicle.

“I’m really looking forward to going against them and it’s our last chance to implement some more systems and ways of playing into our game.”
