NEWPORT County AFC manager Michael Flynn insists he and his players won’t get carried away even if they follow up Saturday’s shock win at Coventry City by knocking Championship giants Leeds United out of the Carabao Cup tomorrow.

Reece Cole’s second-half strike earned County three points at the Ricoh Arena and a first win in League Two this season, ending Coventry’s 100 per cent start to the campaign in the process.

Flynn dedicated the win to his wife Victoria and new-born son Samuel and he was delighted with another determined display on the road.

“It was an outstanding performance,” said the Exiles boss.

“That was the fourth away game in a row and the boys took it in their stride and put in a performance to make me very happy.

“It’s a beautiful stadium, a beautiful pitch and they’ve got a good manager and some good players but so have we.

“And we’ve even got a beautiful pitch now as well!

“We’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves,” he added.

“It’s going well. I won’t get carried away but I’m positive about the start we’ve had.

“I’ve got a good group. We’re not going to get too carried away when we win and we definitely won’t get too low when we lose.

“That’s the spirit we’ve got and we’re going to keep improving.”

County were without Sean Rigg and Tom Owen-Evans, while Shawn McCoulsky and Lamar Reynolds started on the bench as Joe Quigley was also handed a debut alongside Cole.

“I’ve told them now that the shirt is theirs to keep, or to lose,” said Flynn.

“We’ve got competition now in all positions and if they don’t perform then somebody will be there to take that shirt.

“Those who didn’t play have got to be ready when called upon.

“And that’s what I want – that competitive edge is healthy.

“Sean wasn’t too well and Tom went over on his ankle on Thursday but it was really good to see Ben Tozer back on the bench.

“It’s a big positive. The squad is starting to come together now and we’re really happy.”

Looking ahead to Leeds, Flynn said: “I might make changes but we’ll have a look.

“We’ll assess everyone on Monday and get ready for the fifth away game in a row.”

Meanwhile, County have yet to comment on reports that they are in talks to sign Hartlepool United striker Padraig Amond.

The Irishman refused to travel to Bromley with Hartlepool on Saturday.

Pools boss Craig Harrison told the Hartlepool Mail: “Podge (Amond) came to me on Friday morning, before we travelled down for the game, and made it clear he was not in the right frame of mind to be involved.

“So he made himself unavailable for selection or to travel.

“We need to talk about it and look at it. We need to communicate over the next few days and work out exactly where we are.”
