NEWPORT County AFC host Colchester United tonight looking to extend their unbeaten home league record beyond 213 days.

County have not lost a League Two match at Rodney Parade since the 3-1 defeat to Blackpool on March 18.

And they go into tonight’s match full of confidence after Saturday’s 4-0 win at Forest Green Rovers, which lifted Michael Flynn’s men to sixth in the table.

Colchester are 16th after they were beaten 1-0 at home by Carlisle United at the weekend.

Exiles midfielder Matty Dolan says the record is something that the players and manager want to keep going as long as possible.

“The gaffer has said he wants to make it 300 days and go on from there,” said Dolan.

“We’ve just got to keep pressing on.

“It’s a lovely place to play now with the brand new pitch, we’re creating chances and exciting the fans and everyone is getting behind us so we want to keep that going.”

Dolan has created three goals from corners since his return to the starting XI in the last two games.

And County are the most deadly team in the country from corners.

They have scored an incredible nine goals from corner kicks this season – four more than nearest challengers Bradford City, who have managed five in League One.

That is a stat that Colchester United boss John McGreal will be well aware of and he has put the onus on his players to “make things happen” at Rodney Parade.

McGreal is certainly looking for a big improvement in South Wales.

“We have two tough away games coming up, and we’ve got to nail down a few truths, because we should have taken something away from the Carlisle game,” he told the East Anglian Daily Times.

“The players have got to take responsibility on the pitch. They have got to make things happen, or at least shore things up at the back.

“But we are still full of confidence,” added McGreal.

“We are in a good place, even though we are disappointed knowing we haven’t come away with anything from Saturday’s game.

“We will be looking to be cuter and cleverer in front of goal, and we’ll take the positives out of the weekend performance and move on.”

Meanwhile, County academy star Lewis Collins – the younger brother of former Exiles first-teamer Aaron – started for Wales under-17s yesterday.

The Wales youngsters were beaten 4-0 by the Netherlands in Hungary in qualifying group nine for the UEFA European Under-17 Championship.
