WALES were facing the wooden spoon in two competitions after a black Wednesday for Welsh junior golf with heavy defeats suffered in both the boys and girls home internationals at Machynys Peninsula, Llanelli and Southerndown respectively.

On the second day of the boys event Wales lost the foursomes to England 4.5-0.5 but it was closer than the scoreline suggests with two of the games lost on the final green.

In the afternoon it was totally one-way traffic with England taking control almost from the start and when their skipper Hiluta birdied the last hole it became 9-0 to them in the singles a record overall 14-5.0.5 reverse.

The rub of the green was not with Wales although they could never have won against such a strong side.

Tommy Fleetwood eagled the final hole to beat Welsh boys champion Jo Vickery.

Ireland beat Scotland 9.5-5.5 in the other match and Wales can only avoid the wooden spoon now with a big win over Ireland.

In the girls internationals Wales were whitewashed 9-0 by England despite leading in five of the six singles for the first nine holes.

Cottrell Park's Gemma Bradbury holed in one at the fifth - known locally as Carter's Folly - but still lost 3&2 to Holly Clyburn.
