MIDFIELDER Josh Sheehan says Newport County AFC will be targeting 10 wins in their final 10 games of the season as they chase a place in the League Two play-offs.

Sheehan scored the opening goal as County won 2-0 at Yeovil Town on Saturday – their first victory since January 19.

That lifted the Exiles to 11th in the table, five points below the top-seven after 36 matches.

And, with 30 points still to play for, Sheehan says the target is simple between now and May.

“We’re going to try and win every game left obviously, there’s 10 left so we’ll try and win 10,” he told iFollow Exiles.

“There’s no doubt about that and I think with the quality that we have in our squad we have what it takes.

“Hopefully we can go on that run and keep going just like they did at the end of last season.”

Michael Flynn’s men won seven of their final 12 games to complete their Great Escape from relegation last season.

And Sheehan says they will have the same approach this time – total focus on the task ahead.

“That’s what the gaffer told us after the game – we’ve closed the gap and it’s all down to us now,” added the 22-year-old.

“We’re not concerned about anybody else because however they get on is how they get on.

“If they win every game, then it’s impossible for us. But I doubt they will so if we keep winning our games then I’m sure we’ll have a very good chance of getting there.”

County’s next match is a home clash with Luton Town, who were knocked off the top of the table for the first time since November 25 when they lost 2-1 at home to new leaders Accrington Stanley at the weekend.

“We won’t take it any different whether they are at the top of the league or the bottom of the league,” said Sheehan.

“Luton have always been one of the top teams in this division, they’ve got a great fan base and a lot of money behind them.

“But on the pitch, it’s 11 v 11 so we’ll just back ourselves and obviously try and win the game.

“We’ll just do our thing, do our analysis on them and play our game.

“We’ll make sure we go into that game full of confidence and we just want to win every single game from now until the end of the season.

“We are looking towards promotion the play-offs, we’re not looking to have an easy ride and just stay in the league this season.”
