MICHAEL Flynn says he has “no problem with being ruthless” when it comes to letting players go from his Newport County AFC squad to make room for new arrivals.

Those who Flynn feels do not have a future at Rodney Parade will find out “in the next few days”, according to the Exiles boss.

When it came to decisions on his future at this time of the season, Flynn was on the receiving end of both good and bad news during a playing career that took in more than half-a-dozen clubs.

The former Wigan Athletic, Gillingham and Bradford City midfielder takes his Newport side to Brunton Park tomorrow for their last fixture of the campaign against Carlisle United (kick-off 3pm).

The visitors will be looking to end the term on a high but Flynn says the match won’t have any bearing on who he decides to keep and let go.

“They’ve had a whole season and if I was to make a decision off one game I’d be losing my marbles, and I’m not doing that yet,” he said.

“The people who aren’t staying will be told in the next few days and there’s one or two we’ll talk to.

“I’ve got no problem with being ruthless, it’s happened to me a few times in my career.

“There’s ways and means to go about it but I’ll try and do it in the right way and hopefully there’ll be no hard feelings.”

In terms of recruiting, the fact County’s League Two status was secured some time ago means Flynn has had the chance to get his plans in place before the season is over.

He added: “It gives me an advantage because you can talk to players earlier, players you have and players you want.

“We’ve just got to make sure we find the right players.

“Recruitment is probably the main thing in football now and we’ve got to get that right.”

A player who will definitely be at Rodney Parade for another year is left-back Dan Butler, the club’s player of the season who is set to bring up 100 Exiles appearances tomorrow.

“He’s had a few tough times at the club where a lot of players would have folded and given up,” said Flynn.

“He has shown strength of character and has improved endlessly this season.

“If you’d asked me at the start of the season would him and David Pipe play that many games then probably not, maybe Dan a few more because of his age, but they’ve both been very solid.

“Dan’s been very good this season.

“It’s a credit to him and I’m pleased that he’ll manage to get a century of games.”
