TEENAGE swimmer Megan Allison broke the Welsh junior record for the 50-metre freestyle when winning an impressive medal haul at the Welsh Long Course Championships.

The 15-year-old from the City of Newport Swimming Club, in partnership with Newport Live and Rougemont School, lowered a time that has stood since 2009 from 26.90 seconds to 26.77 seconds.

Megan started the four-day meet with a bronze in the 100-metre butterfly on in a new personal best time, followed by a silver in the 400-metre freestyle. In the 200-metre freestyle on the Saturday Megan also posted a new best time, winning another bronze medal.

The Sunday was an exceptional day for Megan, as she won the gold in the 100-metre freestyle with a new personal best, followed up only ten minutes later with another gold in the 200-metre butterfly.

Megan had previously competed in the 200-metre butterfly in last year's Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas, where she also made the final in her first international competition.

Sunday was always going to be a difficult day to top, but it was on the Monday that Megan succeeded in winning the 50-metre freestyle with her new Welsh junior record. She also helped the relay team to a bronze in the 4x100-metre freestyle relay.

"Megan is a very dedicated swimmer and student who combines her busy training and racing schedule with her school work, and excels at both," said James Goodwin, City of Newport Swimming Club head coach.

"I am sure we can expect more great things from Megan and the other Newport swimmers in the future."
