AFTER being awarded the WRU Division Three East D title, Newport Saracens topped off their excellent season with a well-attended club awards night at their clubhouse at Maesglas Fields.

The league trophy was presented by a WRU representative with individual medals being handed out to all the playing squad.

Sarries lost just one league game all season when they went down narrowly away at Hollybush in February.

They averaged more than 50 points a game post-Christmas and recorded more than 1,000 points with some fine running rugby.

And John Morris and Patrick James’ team went on to reverse the loss to Hollybush with a 55-point home win.

Club chairman Nick Parkes gave an overview of the season and went on to thank all the playing and support staff for their efforts along with club officials and all the people behind the scenes who worked tirelessly to make sure the club earned promotion to Division Three East C.

Club stalwart Gary James entertained everyone and the coaches presented the trophies.

The award for most improved player was shared by two players – wing Joe Dineen and forward Jason Belton.

A special playing award went to hard working and popular front row Rhys Price and influential centre Steffan Morgan was top try scorer with 18.

The John Shine trophy for best newcomer was presented by former Sarries full back John Goldsworthy and went to another full back Geraint O'Donovan.

Player of the season, as voted by the players, went to Gwilym O'Donovan – brother of Geraint.

Nick Parkes then presented the chairman's trophy for outstanding club contribution to Ian Morgan.

Clubman of the season for all round contribution was won by Patrick James.

And the prize for the most outstanding player of the season went to Rhys Hendley who played in all three rows of the scrum as well as the odd game in the backs when needed. He also kicked the majority of goals.

Training for the new season starts tomorrow (Wednesday) and three warm-up games are already in place for August.

Any new players interested in joining the team should contact Pat James on 07848 834844.
