SEAN McGoldrick is confident he can deliver the goods on home soil tonight, despite having something of an unsettled build-up to his maiden fight in Wales as a professional.

The 26-year-old can’t wait to put on a show for his loyal army of fans at Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff, with Irishman Dylan McDonagh standing in the way of McGoldrick’s seventh straight win.

The eight-round bantamweight contest will be a first for the Newport stylist, unbeaten since his March 2017 debut, without trainer Tony Borg.

McGoldrick ended an 18-year association with St Joseph’s Boxing Club after his last outing in June, since when he has been searching for somewhere to train for tonight.

While travelling up and down the country may have had a negative effect on some, McGoldrick, who eventually settled at Gavin Rees’ gym near Newbridge, feels it’s the opposite for him.

“One way of looking at it would be that leaving St Joes is a gamble,” said the 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, who will have ex-world champion Rees in his corner.

“But the way I’m looking at it is that it has been really good for me just to have a different set of eyes looking at me and someone else pushing me.

“It’s been a good thing and hopefully on Saturday night it will show in my performance.

“If anything it has helped me because as I’ve been travelling I’ve been getting good sparring in as well.

“Different people see different things to pick up on and I really think on Saturday night that some of those mistakes I made in the past will be rectified.”

He added: “It has given me a different mindset to my other fights.

“I need to be on it, I need to be focused, and I really do believe I’m going to put in a good performance.

“I feel great in myself so hopefully all that will come out in the ring.

“I think Welsh fans are in for a treat, it’s going to be an unbelievable card.

“There’s going to be a good crowd and they are going to be very vocal.”

As for McDonagh, he arrives in Cardiff with an unbeaten record of 3-0, with all three of his victories coming against fighters from Bulgaria.

“I’ve seen a little bit of him,” said McGoldrick. “He’s very game and is going to come to win.

“He’s 3-0 and not coming to make up the numbers.”

Meanwhile, there is a fourth pro outing for McGoldrick’s former St Joes stablemate Dan Barton.

The Newport super-middleweight takes on Portugal’s Yailton Neves over four rounds on the undercard of the Matchroom JD NXTGEN promotion.
