MICHAEL Flynn is keeping his feet on the ground after Tuesday’s terrific 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Cambridge United but he admits his Newport County AFC side will be a handful for anyone on that form, writes Andrew Penman.

Two first-half strikes from Padraig Amond and second-half goals from Jamille Matt and Antoine Semenyo sealed an impressive win for Flynn’s men at the Abbey Stadium before Tyler Forbes conceded a last-minute penalty.

The manager hailed his team for an “outstanding performance” but he knows they will have to maintain those standards when they return to League Two action at table-topping Exeter City on Saturday.

“I’m definitely not getting carried away,” he said. “It was a cup game and they had a few missing but those are the standards we set.

“That’s what we’ve got to be about and we’ve got to keep those standards. We’ve got to keep it going.

“I’m really happy but I’m not going to get carried away. We’ve got a tough game at Exeter on Saturday.

“We’ve got to go down there and show the same grit, the same determination and the same professionalism and take our chance.

“We’ll give anyone a game on that form,” added Flynn.

“I thought they were excellent and I’m not even getting too down-hearted about the last goal.

“It was a slip. It wasn’t anything silly. It was just one of those things.”

Flynn hopes to have David Pipe, Andrew Crofts and Robbie Willmott available for the trip to Exeter but Mark O’Brien is likely to miss out again.

“Mark O’Brien will probably be the only one out,” he explained. “It was an impact injury against Hereford and there was a bit of swelling.

"He’s had an injection just to settle it down and it just depends when he can pick up the training.

"We’re talking a few days more than a few weeks now but I think Saturday is too early for him.”
