Steve Jones Trophy match

9:15am Friday 14th September 2007

A special Steve Jones trophy has been struck and will be played for tonight in a local derby between Pontypool and Pontypool United (kick-off 7.15pm).

The trophy has been donated by Newport-based businessman Roly Mason and will be presented to the winners on an annual basis in memory of the former Pontypool and Newport player and coach who died suddenly in the early hours of last Sunday.

Part of the proceeds will go to the fostering team at the Corn Exchange, High Street, Newport, a charity which Jones patronised.

l The funeral will be held at St Hilda's Church, Griffithstown, next Wednesday at 10am, 11am at the Gwent Crematorium and then the Race Club, Pontypool. Jones left a partner Elizabeth, son Leighton, who captains Pontypool, and daughter, Molly.

l The players and officials at Newbridge have paid tribute to Jones, who had taken up the role of forwards coach at the Welfare Ground this summer.

Bridge were scheduled to play Pontypridd this evening but have called the game off.

"He was a really good guy and a brilliant coach," said team manager Chris Jones. "Some of the players only worked for him for around eight weeks but what he passed on in that time, with all his experience and knowledge, will always stand them in good stead.

"I know he would have wanted the game to go ahead tonight but the club felt it just wasn't right."
