Bearman is player of year

JOE Bearman is the South Wales Argus readers' Newport Gwent Dragons player of the year.

The 29-year-old Cornish back row forward topped the poll by a comfortable margin from captain Colin Charvis, last year's winner, with prop Adam Black in third place.

We received more entries than in any previous year, showing the level of support for the Dragons and their players despite a disappointing season.

Bearman was presented with the trophy by Argus sports editor Phil Webb at Rodney Parade after the Dragons completed a training session before tonight's final game of the season against Leinster at Rodney Parade.

"I'd like to thank the supporters for voting for me, it's a really nice trophy to have and it'll have a special place on my mantlepiece at home," said Bearman.

"I've been mostly injury free this season (apart from a recent back injury) which is the key and I've been able to play a lot of games."

Fan Steven Williams was the winner of a jersey signed by all the players after his name was pulled out of a hat containing all the entries.

He was presented with his prize by his favourite player -flanker Jamie Ringer.
