The Newport Wasps came within ten points of the Premier League Champions the Edinburgh Monarchs despite falls, mechanical problems and the withdrawal of a rider through injury in his first outing.
The final score was Edinburgh Monarchs 51 - Newport Wasps 41 with Leigh Lanham making a top scoring debut for his new team. He received good support from Chris who suffered a fall and exclusion. Paul Fry also fell while leading a race at the Armadale Stadium while newcomer Jonas Andersson was affected by a malfunctioning machine. Greatest concern was Newport's young Aussie reserve Shelby Rutherford who despite riding in the re-run of heat two was badly shaken in a first bend melee at the first time of asking. Shelby withdrew from the match after picking up a point in his only outing.
The Wasps move onto the Scottish Borders on Saturday evening for a Premier League fixture against the Berwick Bandits before returning to South Wales on Sunday afternoon for a home fixture versus the Rye House Rockets at 2.30pm EDINBURGH MONARCHS 51: Aaron Summers 11+3, Matthew Wethers 11+1, Michal Rajowski 11, Andrew Tully 8+1, Ryan Fisher 5+1, Sean Stoddart 3+1, Rider Replacement for Thomas H Jonasson NEWPORT WASPS 41: Leigh Lanham 12+1, Chris Kerr 9+1, James Holder 8+2, Jordan Frampton 7, Jonas Andersson 3, Paul Fry 1+1, Shelby Rutherford 1
