MANY matches in the Thomas, Carroll Welsh Club Cricket Conference were affected by rain on Saturday, but two games in Division One managed to beat the weather, including the one at Lisvane where leaders Newbridge maintained their winning streak with a four-wicket win.

Eswar Krishnamurthy made 56 and Snehassis Tripathy 35 as Lisvane reached 192-8 going in first. James Horton Jnr took a superb 6-49 off 10 overs and one maiden for Newbridge and Dave Curtis returned 10-3-15-0 to keep Lisvane tied down.

Horton Jnr then took up the cudgel and cracked a superb 80 not out to help Newbridge to a four-wicket win with 11 overs to spare and complete a brilliant game.

Dave Fortune scored 57 in support, Chris James 17 and Jonathan Westwood 10, while Harsh took 3-16 for Lisvane.

Winless Pontymister entertained fellow strugglers Llantwit Fardre and went in first to finish on 172 all out. Mo Asif made 68 and Nick Madden 20, while for Fardre, James Pickles took 3-23 off 5.3 overs.

Rugby international Gareth Wyatt, who will be staying at Rodney Parade in the coming season after moving from the Dragons to Newport, led the Fardre run chase with a fine 62 not out and Pickles chipped in with 32 as Fardre got the runs for the loss of two wickets. Asif had 1-30 off nine overs for Pontymister.

None of the Division Two games survived, but Caerleon went to Llanarth where the home side racked up 261-8 when they batted first. Gareth Powell got 88, Mark Baxter 64 and Simon Wharton 39, while Huw Thomas took 3-52 for Caerleon.

Toby Higgins (48), Jamie Evans (38) and Ian Peploe (34) all contributed in the Caerleon innings but Chris Powell’s 6-29 proved decisive as they were bowled out for 200.

Jaideep Shah made a magnificent 144 and Dave Lomax 117 not out as Newport III piled up a massive 318-2 at home to Blaengarw. In the circumstances, Mike Huntley’s return of 1-33 off 10 overs was excellent.

Huntley then scored 69, James Hardwick 74 and Will Struthers 29 as Blaengarw went for the runs but came up short on 258-8. Lomax had 3-41 off 10 overs for Newport III and Tom Hamer 2-39 off 10.

Chepstow III were dismissed for 126 at Lisvane III in Division Four with Nick Haincock taking 5-22 for Lisvane and Martin Smith making 56 for Chepstow III.

Lisvane III got the runs for the loss of seven wickets.

Monkswood managed 168-9 going in first at home to Blaina with Glyn Roberts getting 38, Mark Bleazard 32 and Gareth Trumper 28. Gareth Pagett took 4-30 off 10 overs for Blaina.

Andy Palmer scored 70 in the Blaina reply and Chris Despres 24, but Bernie Smith took 4-34 and Matt Malson 3-43 to get them all out for 148.

Panteg III went in first at home to Sudbrook III in the Alliance Division One and were dismissed for 94 as veteran Gordon Voke took 3-4 off six overs. Scott Murphy managed their top score of 31.

Sudbrook got the runs for the loss of three wickets, with Denny Wallace making 37 not out. Vijay Joshi took 1-13 off nine overs for Panteg III.

Leaders Cwmbran Woodlands didn’t play their game at Bedlinog, Maesycwmmer beat Wenvoe and second-placed Tonyrefail & Edmundstown lost to fourth-placed Undy & Magor.

Luke Hughes scored 45 as Tonyrefail & Edmundstown were bowled out for 124 with Harry James taking 3-14 for Undy & Magor, who got the runs for three wickets with the ever-reliable John Hobbs making 33.

Bottom club Panteg IV dismissed St Fagans V for 70 in the Alliance Division Two in a game reduced to 30 overs.

Rhys Owen made 20 as Andrew Collier returned 3-11 off 8.5 overs for Panteg IV and Tom Westwood 6-3-5-2.

Dave Tippins (31 n.o) and Gary Millership (21) then led Panteg IV to an eight-wicket win in 21.4 overs.

Another game reduced to 30 overs was in the Division One Second XI where Upper Rhondda were the visitors at Abertillery Park.

They scored 200-4, with Gareth Long getting 69 not out and Matt Smith 63 not out. Steve Davies took 2-26 for Abertillery and Mike Doel 2-41. Doel then made 64, Chris Lewis 44 and Andy Humphries was still there on 62 not out when Abertillery reached 201-3.

Pontymister managed 153 all out at Dinas Powys with Andrew Tovey getting 43 and Alan Hughes 24. Mike Lowe took 3-18 for Dinas Powys, Richard Morgan 3-26 and Ian Coughtrey 2-35.

Mark Lezar took 2-25 when Dinas Powys batted but Geoff Colley made 52 not out and Tari Ali 39 not out to get them home by six wickets.

Keith Spencer scored 71, Ben Woodward 68 and David Griffiths 29 as Llanarth made 223-3 at Caerleon in the Division Two Second XI.

Only Stef Davies (20) offered much resistance as Caerleon crumbled to 77 all out as Griffiths took 3-17 for Llanarth and Eddie James 3-18.

Abercarn held home side Llantwit Fardre to 167-5, in which Matthew Walsh made 83 not out and Llewellyn Griffiths 41. Dan Evans took 2-35 for Abercarn and Carl Hughes 2-38.

Abercarn got the runs for three wickets with Peter Lee making 50, Greg Hawkins 39 not out and David Hale 32. Alan Jones took 2-33 for Fardre.

Table-toppers Newbridge went in first at home to Monkswood but could only manage 153 all out. Sean Collier made 45, Nigel James 27 and Leighton Rees 22 as John Storey took 3-34 for Monkswood, Dave Weller 3-36 and Andy Hancock 2-15.

Storey (40) and Mark Jones (36) battled hard when Monkswood went in but James Gogerthy took 4-7 for Newbridge and Corey Watkins 2-18 to get them all out for 124.

Division Three Second XI leaders Barry Wanderers batted first at home to Newport IV and reached 183 all out.

Tom Ridgewell scored 59, Elwyn Toozer 47 and Andy Furnham 20 as Matt Bryant took 4-15 for Newport IV and Alan Davies 4-28.

But Newport IV’s batting failed to match their bowling and they slumped to 127 all out.

Jordan Batchelor got 28, Davies 22 not out and John Rowlett 21 but James Griffiths took 2-23 for the Wanderers and Mike Ashton 2-28.
