NEWPORT’S former army man Lee Churcher is ready to show he belongs at super middleweight, in front of the king of the division.
The khaki clad puncher, who has built up a tremendous following in just two professional outings, is moving up a weight from middle to super middle for Friday’s Calzaghe Promotions show.
And the 28-year old is keen to show the king of super middleweights, former undefeated world champion Joe, that he too can blaze a trail for Wales.
Churcher takes on Lee Nicholson (3-16-2) and is determined to prove that he belongs in the division Calzaghe ruled for ten years.
It’s the first of a double-header for Churcher, who also features on December 11 when Frank Maloney is staging a bill, in front of the Sky television cameras.
“I’ve been training hard and to have two fights in three weeks and a chance to really prove myself, that’s an early Christmas present for me,” Churcher explained.
“I have improved in my second fight and I will show again that I am getting better all the time.
“I have moved to super middleweight and there will be a big improvement, I feel so much stronger at the weight and will try to impress even more, I feel like my timing has improved immeasurably and you’ll see that tomorrow.
“I’ve taken the power with me to super middleweight and I am looking for a stoppage.”
Churcher is a Calzaghe fan and hopes to catch his eye.
“Me being a super middleweight now, I can show Joe what he’s missing, I think he knows a thing or two about the weight,” he said.
“It’s a pleasure to be boxing in front of him and I am going to put on a good show.
“I am at a learning stage in my career, but I am 28 and need to move quickly, I am strongly aiming for a British title fight, but that’s some way off.
“Hopefully by the end of 2010 I will be fighting for Welsh or Celtic titles, that’d be great progress.”
Churcher’s trainer Tony Borg, who runs the St Joseph’s stable in Pill, admits it wasn’t a hard decision to move his man to super middleweight.
“It’s more natural for him, he could do middleweight, but it’s asking a lot and he’s not a light heavyweight. He’s a pleasure to train, he’s improved a lot from his first to his second fight and that’s just what you want.”
