PREMIER League Riders Champion Ricky Ashworth, former Wasps Niels-Kristian Iverson and Mads Korneliussen plus track record holder Andrew Tully are among the riders signed up for the New Year Classic at Queensway Meadows on Sunday, January 3.

This event has been a traditional close season fixture which attracts speedway fans from all over the UK as they take the rare chance to see some racing action before the next season which starts in March.

So far a dozen racers are confirmed with the quarter of Ashworth, Iversen, Korneliusen and Tully being joined by Swedish brothers Robert and Daniel Henderson from Team Bikab based at Eskilstuna, Ben Barker, David Howe, Chris Neath, Adam Roynon, Brent Werner and Carl Wilkinson. Neath, Werner and Wilkinson are also former Wasps with Howe and Werner former victors of the title.

The meeting will feature an initial 20 heats with all the competitors meeting each other once in five starts. Then there will be a Grand Final for the top four scorers at that stage.

Meanwhile the Newport management have been busy assembling the Wasps team for the next Premier League campaign with Leigh Lanham, Kim Nilsson, Grant Tregoning, Jonas Andersson and Todd Kurtz all signed and sealed leaving two team places to fill.

For the Newport Hornets National League squad Tim Webster returns to the club on a full transfer from Weymouth and will take the Wasps Number Eight standby role while the fitness of Kyle Newman, who shattered his left thigh in six places in October, is assessed.

Veteran Tony Atkin returns to captain the side for whom 17-year-old Todd Kurtz will double up with the Wasps. Also on the team roster are local boy Tom Young, Sam Hurst and Shelby Rutherford. All of whom rode for the Hornets last season.

Newport Speedway has been awarded the National League Pairs Final. This event was won on the Isle of Wight in 2009 by Newport's Tony Atkin and Grant Tregoning.
