GLAMORGAN batsman Tom Maynard has expressed his relief after he finally got his move away from the Swalec Stadium.

The 21-year-old signed a three-year deal with Surrey yesterday a month of uncertainty at Glamorgan.

On Christmas Eve he announced his intention to leave the Welsh county in the wake of the controversial departure of his father Matthew.

The director of cricket left following the appointments of Colin Metson as managing director and Alviro Petersen as captain.

Glam initially said they would not allow Tom Maynard to leave and the right-hander held talks with his new South African skipper at the start of the month.

However, he will now be playing his cricket at the Oval and has expressed his relief that the saga is over.

“It was a massive decision to leave Glamorgan and something that I have taken a lot of time over,” he said.

“I had to really make sure in my mind that it was the right move.

“It was unfortunate that I had to leave in bad circumstances but I couldn’t have picked a better place to further my career and take my game to the next level.

“I’ve come to win things, that’s what I want to do. I want to play in a team full of winners and a team that can win trophies.

“It was a no-brainer really with the way this team is going.”

Maynard made his Glamorgan debut in 2007 and established himself as a key figure in one-day cricket.

But he could face an early return to Cardiff in the four-day game – Glamorgan host Surrey in the County Championship on April 20.

Surrey cricket manager Chris Adams said the opportunity to sign Maynard, though unplanned, was too good to pass up.

“Once we received permission from Glamorgan to speak to Tom, it became clear that Surrey was his preferred destination,” he said.

“He has been attracted here by a number of factors including the wicket at the Oval and the fantastic history of the club but most of all he had a sense of wanting to be at Surrey through what will be a very exciting time here. We were painfully on the receiving end of what he is capable of last season and although this was not a signing we had planned for, it was an opportunity that was too good not to take.”

Glam, who have not received a fee for the move, yesterday wished Maynard all the best.
