NEWPORT Gwent Dragons are on the verge of signing of Wales wing/full-back Tom Prydie.

Talks with the talented 20-year-old are at an advanced stage and he is set to pen a two-year deal with the Rodney Parade region this week.

Prydie is currently on loan at Wasps from the Ospreys and has made seven appearances for the Aviva Premiership strugglers on the wing.

The Dragons, who see him primarily as a full-back, believe they can help push four-times capped Prydie back into the international reckoning.

The 6ft 4ins speedster from Porthcawl became Wales’ youngest Test player when he started against Italy at the age of 18 years and 25 days in the 2010 Six Nations.

His call-up came despite only having played a pair of LV Cup games and a six-minute cameo off the bench in a Heineken Cup game.

Prydie went on to become Wales' youngest try scorer when he raced over against South Africa in June 2010.

His rapid rise stalled because of injury and he has fallen down the pecking order, both internationally and regionally.

Wales coach Warren Gatland sparked the ire of the Ospreys in 2010 by claiming he needed to play more rugby yet Prydie’s action in Wales has largely been with Swansea in the Premiership.

He has made just 12 appearances for the Liberty Stadium outfit – six of them in the LV Cup – and headed to Wycombe on a short-term deal in January to help in injury-ravaged Wasps’ bid to avoid relegation.

Prydie will effectively replace Gloucester-bound full-back Martyn Thomas next season and will compete for the number 15 jersey with another new arrival in Dan Evans.

The 23-year-old, capped twice by Wales on the tour to North America in 2009, is heading to Rodney Parade from the Scarlets.

Prydie will also be an option on the wing along with former Springbok Tonderai Chavhanga (whose new deal is likely to be ratified by the Welsh Rugby Union this week), Will Harries, Adam Hughes, Matthew Pewtner and Mike Poole.
