Rodney Parade talks go on as deadline nears
7:20am Tuesday 29th May 2012 in Sport
By Andrew Penman
TALKS between Newport County AFC, Newport RFC and Newport Gwent Dragons over a groundshare at Rodney Parade are continuing with all sides optimistic that an agreement can be reached by Thursday.
That is the deadline set by the Football Conference authorities for all members of the Blue Square Bet Premier division to decide where they will be playing their home matches in the 2012/13 season.
If a deal cannot be done with the city’s rugby clubs, County will remain at their Spytty Park home, where the playing surface has been labelled “embarrassing” by chairman Chris Blight.
But the Exiles chief is upbeat after a day of meetings at Rodney Parade yesterday, which involved a representative from the Conference as well as the three main parties.
No further meeting is scheduled for today but work is ongoing and progressing well, according to Blight.
“I am confident it will happen and I’d be really disappointed if it didn’t,” said Blight.
“I take my hat off to the people at Rodney Parade because they are working as hard as we are to get this done.
“It has been very complicated and there are still hurdles to get over but their enthusiasm has not withered at all.”
The main issue is integrating three lots of fixtures into the schedule at the ground owned by Newport RFC and run by Rodney Parade Ltd.
Blight added: “At Spytty it was just Llanwern and ourselves to consider but with three teams it makes it that bit harder.
“There is enthusiasm on all sides that we can work the issues out by 5pm on Thursday but if not it will be plan B.”
Any agreement reached would have to be rubber-stamped by the Dragons board of directors, with a board meeting understood to be arranged for this afternoon.

One question - the deal has to be ratified by the Dragons' Board. What about Newport R.F.C. who OWN R.P.? Have they authorized the Dragons' Board to sign up for themselves as well?
There are thousands out here sweating - and that's not just due to the hot weather! I can't bear the thought of more problems with Spytty and an indifferent, not to say hostile City Council.
Does anybody know whether the Council did anything to show appreciation for our Wembley venture? I suspect the County got nothing except the deputy Mayor's presence at Wembley. Any other City or Town would have given the squad and Management an open-top bus ride through the City and a Civic Reception.
or did I miss something??
Was that a belly-laugh I just heard?

Anyway, a Civic Centre Reception should surely have been arranged on a "win or lose" basis.

As to not having two matches on the same day, was the Conference rule brought in purely for FOOTBALL reasons, nothing to do with rugby? The F.A. itself does not bar two matches .The Argus mentioned Nottingham hosting a football match at 3.00 p.m. and then, after a quick change of lightweight posts - glassfibre, perhaps? - putting on a Championship rugby match.
Let's hope the Conference man who was in on part of the discussions agreed that this would be no problem.
Logic tells me the deal will go through and Conference approval obtained within tomorrow's deadline but my heart makes me worry that we could be stymied either by some petty interpretation of the rules or not enough Dragons/RFC directors endorsing the "deal".
But there are 2 consolations if we do get frustrated by pettifogging .
1. We'll have a year to get a deal absolutely acceptable to everybody.
2. With us not having to share with Llanwern this season the pitch will survive better.
I look forward to downing a celebratory drink tomorrow - maybe today - if we get the result nearly all of us are praying for and at the same time saying "Up yours Newport City Council, find some other suckers to pay you for using Spytty ."
