NEWPORT County AFC teenage sensation Lee Evans is refusing to get carried away with the Exiles’ superb start to the season.

Free-scoring County are top of the embryonic Blue Square Bet Premier table after thrilling victories over Mansfield Town and Nuneaton Town this week.

Youth team product Evans completed the 4-0 rout of Nuneaton on Tuesday with his first goal for his hometown club and is delighted with his own start but he knows there is a long way to go in the campaign.

“It’s a great start to the season, we’ve just got to keep it going now,” said the 18-year-old ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Lincoln City.

“We had to make sure we got a win in our first game at home, that was probably more important than the win at Mansfield.

“We wanted a big crowd and they turned up and we’re just glad we gave them a performance to send them home happy.

“But we know it’s just two games. We’ve played well so far but now we’re focusing on Lincoln. The next game is always the most important. We won’t get carried away.”

All the talk of keeping their feet on the ground won’t stop the Rodney Parade crowd getting excited and Evans received the biggest cheer of the night when his goal went in on Tuesday.

“It was a great moment,” said the youngster. “I was cursing Crowy (Danny Crow) when he turned back. I thought he was going to shoot but he chipped it in beautifully for me and it was an easy tap-in.

“I was delighted to get my first goal for my hometown club.

“My old man said the goal would come, I just had to keep working hard and it was put on a plate for me.

“If I keep playing well the manager can’t take me out of the team,” he added.

“He has signed quality players like Mike Flynn, a Newport boy who has played League football for most of his career, and Jake Thomson, Max Porter and Lee Minshull.

“So I knew it would be tough but I knew if I kept going and worked hard in training I’d have a chance and I’ve just got to keep putting the performances in now to justify my place.”

After the 4-3 win at Mansfield, Evans was also pleased that County managed to shut out Nuneaton.

“We went in at 2-0, just like on Saturday, but this time we didn’t concede,” he said. “We knew we had to keep a clean sheet and that is a real bonus. That is credit to the back four and the keeper and the whole team – we are all pressing hard and that’s what we need to keep doing.”
