No goal woe for Danny Crow

NEWPORT County striker Danny Crow admits he’s feeling the heat having failed to find his first goal for the club.

Crow, a summer signing from Luton Town, has failed in seven appearances to open his account while at the same time watching another ex-Hatter, Aaron O’Connor, fire seven goals in eight games since joining the Rodney Parade revolution.

Boss Justin Edinburgh who has described him as a “natural goalscorer”, has handed Crow the number nine shirt.

But so far his eye-catching displays have showcased his skill and work-rate rather than scoring ability.

Crow has in fairness been playing out wide, usually on the left, and confessed it’s not yet a totally natural fit for him.

“It’s frustrating and everyone seems to be putting pressure on me to get a goal,” Crow confessed.

“But I know I can score goals and they will come. I’ve been asked to play wide and obviously you don’t get as many chances as you’d like, but you’ve got to do it for the team.

“But I’m playing fairly well and I’m sure the goals will come. I’m working hard and the fans will be happy with that, but obviously I’m getting a bit of banter off the other lads in the dressing room.

“I’m a laid-back person, but it can get you down a bit, but I mustn’t let it bother me.

“When I’m scoring the other lads won’t be scoring, so it’s swings and roundabouts really.

“The fans haven’t given me any stick.”

Crow admits that despite his barren run in front of goal, he’s 100 per cent confident in his choice of clubs having moved to the Exiles this summer.

“I’m enjoying it, it’s a great place to play,” he said. “It’s been tough recently with defeats at Wrexham and Dartford, but the manager and Dacky (Jimmy Dack, assistant manager) are quick to put a smile on the lads’ faces.”

Crow was angered the Exiles missed a chance to return to the top of the Conference after Saturday’s draw with Stockport, especially as he felt he should’ve been awarded an injury time penalty: “Their geezer (defender) pushed me in the back and the referee hasn’t seen it. It’s frustrating because we could have won it and been top again, but that’s football.”

Edinburgh is fully confident Crow will find his scoring touch sooner rather than later: “He’s doing a great job for the team, working hard and involved with a lot of our creativity.

“At the moment Aaron is the one getting the goals, but they’ll come for Danny, he just needs to keep at it. He’s too good a goalscorer not to get his first goal sooner rather than later.”
