THE first round of the County Motors Chall-enge Cup produced the usual few upsets, the biggest being third division newcomers Pon-thir returning from first division PILCS with a 2-1 victory.

Jack Thomas scored both the Ponthir goals. They are rewarded with a home tie against Cromwell AFC in the second round.

Another upset was third division leaders Marshfield’s home win over first division Pentwynmawr Athletic by an emphatic six goal margin. Scorers were Andrew Godwin, a brace, Billy Evans, Wayne O’reilly, Justin Evans and Michael Godwin.

Second division Tredegar Athletic put out first division Abertillery Excelsiors by three goals to one, Scott Searchfield, Mark Shuck and Andrew Morris the goalscorers.

The tie of the round was the all first division affair between Pill AFC and Cwmbran Town. The Town took the lead through James Vernall. Pill then drew level through Nial Simmons and took the lead through Tristran Chambers.

Then, after a terrible mix up in the Pill defence, Luke Thomas equlised to send the game into extra time.

With no further goals the dreaded penalty shoot out took place when the honours went to Cwmbran Town 6-5.

Cup holders Trethomas Bluebirds easilly went through against Thornwell Red & White at Llanfabon Drive, Aaron Colwill and Andrew Gomer, two apiece, Craig Moss, Tom Morgan, and Nathan Moss scoring in a 7-1 victory.

The Bluebirds now travel to Cwmbran Town in round Two.

Abercarn United were made to fight all the way at Alexandra Road by third division Sebastopol AFC, Duane Thomas, Alex Whatley and substitute Rhys Thomas scoring in a 3-2 win.

At Bettws School, Malpas United defeated Rhymney AFC 3-1, Mason Sully, a brace, and Callum Fairfax the marksmen.

The all second division affair between Cefn Fforest AFC and Llanhilleth Athletic went into extra time with the score at 1-1. Then Cefn Fforest went through 4-1 Andrew Davies, 2, Luke Bowen and Owain Morgan scoring the goals.

Jake Heckles, a brace, Ben Bannon and Richard Mc Carthy scored to see Govilon through at Race AFC.

Lliswerry FC went through by the same margin at Spytty Park against Lucas Cwm-bran, Dave Phillips, 2, Paul White and Dean Merrett the goalscorers.

At Kimberley Park, Albion Rovers went through 4-1 against Second Division Rockfield Rovers, Liam Whiskey and Christopher Keane both scoring twice.

The only league game played was in the first division where Panteg AFC defeated Blaenavon Blues 4-2, Alex Probert and Jon Butcher both scoring two.
