LAST weekend saw the second round of the County Motors Challenge Cup.
Holders Trethomas Bluebirds were unlucky to go out 3-2 when visiting Cwmbran Town, the Bluebirds giving away two own goals and Luke Thomas, scored the other for the Town. Owain Gulliford and Andrew Gomer scored for the Bluebirds.
Cwmbran now meet local rivals Panteg AFC again at the stadium in the third round. Panteg had a 7-3 home victory over third division Whiteheads AFC but needed extra time with the scores 3-3 after normal time.
Jon Butcher (four) Craig Cooper, Tom Wise and an own goal registered for Panteg with Simon Birt, Rhys Thomas and Daryl Berry scoring for Whiteheads. A big shock was at The Revine where first division Fairfield United went out to second division Spencer Youth & BC 5-1.
Dale Cooke scored a brace with Gareth Polston and Steven Perzweski also adding to an own goal.
Spencer are rewarded with a home tie against Tranch AFC.
At the King George V Field first division Govilon were too strong for Cefn Fforest.
Dean Morgan (four), Jamie Laurent, Craig Norman and John Hughes were all on target in a 7-2 victory.
Govilon again have a home tie against third division New Inn who defeated Neuadd Wen 3-1 at Woodfield Road.
David Ellis (two) and Patrick Norvill were the scorers. Blackrock Rovers went through 7-1 when entertaining RTB Ebbw Vale with goals from Steve Wilson and Dan Ellis (two apiece), Chris Wilson, Rhys Briscoe and Jamie Watkins.
Rovers are at home again in round three against Cwmmfrwdoer Sports who had a good 6-3 away win over Marshfield AFC with goals from Mathew Jackson and Kristian Howells (two apiece), Robbie Peake and Jammie Hoskins.
At the Welfare Ground it was all square 1-1 after ninty minutes in the all top division clash between Abercarn United and Albion Rovers.
The contest went right to the wire with Abercarn going through 7-6 on penalties.
In another all first division contest AC Pontymister defeated Clydach Wasps 4-2 at the Bowling Green with Chris Woods, Richard Clayton, Chris Wilson and Warren Derraven scoring.
Newport Corinthians had a two goal away victory over Tredegar Athletic with Nathan Lewis and David Jones, their marksmen.
Corries are away again in round three against Fleur-de-Lys Welfare who narrowly defeated Blaenavon Blues 1-0 at home with Daniel Richard the marksman.
Cromwell AFC returned from Ponthir with a three goal victory with Jon James (two) and Jerome Nunes scoring.
They now travel to Pen-y-Pound to play Abergavenny Thursdays who defeated Ynysddu Crusaders 4-1 with goals from Leon Gilchrist, Toby Purvis, Joe Palmer and Lee Waddon.
At Spytty Park Lliswerry FC won 5-0 against Mardy AFC with Chris Pearse and Dean Merrett both bagging two apiece and Rhys Luffman scoring the other.
They keep home advantage in the next round in an all Newport affair against Malpas United who defeated Rogerstone AFC at Bettws School 2-1 with Michael Williams, and Calum Fairfax, the scorers.
